THOMAS, V.1. 0 | VOLUME II; NUMBER 4 DECEMBER 13° Social Research Center "Remodelling the Model" is the title of a five-page essay that appeared in the Third Quarter 1978 Economic Review. Written by Senior Research Associate Dr. Jerry McElroy, the article traces through events which led to formulation of the Virgin Islands' present economic model. . The most important information contained in the results is the very close statistical association that seems to exist between V.I. and U.S. economic activity. The key policy conclusion is that businessmen and policymakers must pay extremely close attention to mainland developments because of their significant local repercussions. THSONIAN PAPER’ | Dr. S.B. Jones-Hendrickson, coordinator of 4 the Social Research Center, completed a a ites’ paper this quarter entitled "Quantitative Methods and Migration Theories."" He was asked to undertake the project by the Research Institute on Immigration and Ethnic Studies at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. This paper is a development of the econometric portion of a report he presented in 1976 at a Smithsonian conference and it will be part of a larger research study to be published by the Smithsonian at a future date. -4- Robert Norton of Acton, Connecticut has joined the ERC staff as research associate : sen coordinating scientific programs at the Virgin: Islands Ecological Research Station (VIERS) on St. John. He was associated with VIERS earlier this. year while composing ~~ his master's thesis, "Annotated Bird Records for St. John, U.S: Virgin:.Islands..". BOR , 7 ~ Outreach Activities ‘Approximately 100 energy-conscious persons - . from St. Thomas and neighboring islands participated in CRI's Fall-Winter Conference on "Energy Self-sufficiency and the Virgin Islands." The December 8 meeting took place in the Caribbean Room at the St. Thomas Sheraton. Three keynote speakers added their expertise to the sessions: Dick. Holt of the U.S. Department of Energy; Dr. Gifford Albright of Penn State University; and Maanazo Lamakalo of the St. Thomas Community Action Agency. ° During the afternoon session, a panel discussion developed around current energy technologies and federal policy on energy issues. Leading the panel were: Dr. Juan Bonnet of the Center for Energy and Environmental Research in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Dr. Knud Pedersen of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez; Dr. Frank Prince of the V.I. Energy Office; and Lee Fellows of the V.I. National Park Service on St. John. A published Proceedings will be available from the Institute in February. Dr. Norwell Harrigan, CRI director, returned to duty early in November after a six-week vacation leave of absence. During his leave Dr. Harrigan visited the University of Florida at Gainesville to participate in a conference on "Cultural Traditions and Caribbean Identity: The Question of Patrimony." He acted as moderator for one of the sessions. The three-day conference was sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies and the Association of Caribbean Universities and Research Institutes. In addition, Dr. Harrigan discussed with the Center for Latin Ameri- can Studies current matters concerning publications it is printing for CRI, in order to improve publication service.
