:UVI The monthly newsletter of The University of the Virgin Islands Thousands of Virgin Islands students got the chance to see a real astronaut, not on television, but live - at the University of the Virgin Islands NASA Awareness Days. The three-day event, held November 17 to 20 on UVI’s St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, was designed to bring an aware- ness of space administration to the community. It featured astronaut Stephanie Wilson and astrophysi- cist Dr. Beth Brown. Wilson and Dr. Brown are both African-American women who have set records in their fields. Wilson was the first woman and first African-American at the Jet Pro- pulsion Laboratory to be selected for mis- sion specialist training. Dr. Brown was the first African-American woman to obtain a doctorate in astronomy from the Uni- versity of Michigan department of as- tronomy. Wilson is a mission specialist at the Johnson Space Center in Texas. …

Dr. Brown is the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) principal astrophysics acquisition scientist. She works at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland where she conducts research on the hot in- terstellar medium in elliptical galaxies and mechanisms for X- ray emission from faint elliptical galaxies. The women were shining examples to students of what can be accomplished through educa- tion and determination. NASA Awareness Days also celebrated UVI’s partnership with NASA and the United Negro Col- lege Fund’s Office of Special Programs. It included exhibits, panel discussions, workshops and speeches by Wilson and Dr. Brown and other NASA scientists and administrators. On display were NASA exhibits from the Ames Research Center, Kennedy Space Flight Center, Glenn Research Cen- ter, Goddard Space Flight Center and the Langley Research Center. UVI student research posters and science fair projects also were on display. The theme is “From the School House to the Technology Park, Educating Our Commu- nity Through Time for a Golden Future.” The Crucian Festival Parade is scheduled for Saturday, January 4, 2003. Five costume designs have been created by Wayne James. Early-bird sign-up fees are $50 for UVI students, and $80 for staff, faculty and the general public. The early bird special is available until December 6. The fees cover the cost of a costume and refreshments during the parade. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the first of a series of games dubbed the “Ferry Boat Series.” The games were held on November 15 and 16 in UVI’s Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas Campus. UVI’s men’s basketball team won the opening game with a score of 116-60. In the second game the Bucs beat the Stingrays with a score of 103-54. New men’s head coach Sean Georges made his Bucs coaching debut at the games. The women’s volleyball team was equally impressive, winning the opener 25-7, 25-5, 21-25, 25-14. In the second match the Lady Bucs cleaned up 25-11, 25-21, 25-16. More “Ferry Boat Series” games are scheduled for the Spring semester. Lavity Stoutt Community College Stingrays. UVI students make a splash at the Baths in Virgin Gorda. The Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas campus organized the Veteran’s Day excursion.
