Good day language learners at UVI:
Good day language learners at UVI: UVI’s Area of Modern Languages wishes to inform you that all students who wish to register for a French or Spanish class at UVI for the first time and who have previously studied and/or are already familiar with the language (e.g. Heritage speakers, students who have lived in a country where the language is spoken, etc.) are now required to take a language placement exam prior to registering for their first foreign language course. This will help ensure that students are placed into a language course that best suits their second language proficiency skills. For placement purposes, students may either take the WebCAPE or CLEP exams (for the CLEP, please see UVI Cell for details). Instructions to take WebCAPE: The placement exam used by the Area of Modern Languages, WebCAPE, may be taken online from a campus computer lab or your home or library. It should be taken no later than during orientation week by all students who would like to enroll, for the first time, in a French or Spanish course. If you have already taken a French or Spanish course at the university level, and wish to continue your study of this same language, you are not required to take the placement exam unless two years have passed since your last language class. The WebCAPE placement exam can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/2LKzhZq You will then be asked to input your personal details and you will need a credit card and its billing address to pay the fee of $10.00. The exam is not long, approximately 20-45 minutes. Your results will be provided upon completion of the test. You must then print out your results and enroll in the recommended class. If you have any questions, please contact your instructor. Regarding credit for the course(s) tested out of using WebCAPE Retroactive credit will be awarded for the course(s) that a student places out of using the WebCAPE exam, once the student completes the higher level course indicated by the placement exam and passes it with the grade of a “C” or higher. Students will receive retroactive credit for the course(s) tested out of but will not receive a letter grade for these courses. We look forward to working with you. The Modern Languages Area at UVI.
