June 1, 2010 Dear New Student: WELCOME! The members of the University community are looking forward to your arrival on the St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). We are happy that you have decided to attend UVI. The pursuit of a college education will probably be one of the most exciting and rewarding challenges of your life. Research indicates that students who attend and actively participate in an Orientation Program benefit by having a greater level of satisfaction with their University experience. Additionally, they are more likely to remain in college than those who do not attend such programs. The primary objective of our student orientation program is to introduce you to life at UVI. The enclosed schedule details several days of activities. During these days you will have the opportunity to meet new classmates, interact with University administrators, faculty, staff, and student leaders, and become familiar with campus facilities. You will attend orientation sessions, meet individually with your faculty advisor, discuss your academic program for the Fall Semester, and register for classes. In addition, you will tour the campus and participate in workshops and discussion groups designed to meet your concerns and interests as a new or transfer student. New and transfer students are required to attend all sessions of the orientation program. On Sunday, August 15, 2010, on-campus students will check in between 1:00 p.m. – 5:00p.m. at the Student Housing Office and commuters will check in on Monday, August 16, 2010 between 2:00p.m.– 4:00p.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center (SFC) Mezzanine. When you check in you will receive an orientation packet, the 2010-2011 UVI Catalog and other pertinent information. Please bring all materials that you receive to the orientation program. The Enrollment Confirmation Form and a $100.00 enrollment deposit fee is due by July 15, 2010. The $100.00 fee is applied towards your tuition. If you have not submitted your Enrollment Deposit, please do so before the deadline. Your Enrollment Confirmation enables us to plan more effectively for your orientation program and classes. If you are coming from outside the United States Virgin Islands, book your flight early, preferably as soon as you have received information about your residence hall assignment or have secured off-campus housing accommodations. It is very important that you do not arrive in St. Thomas without confirmation of your housing status (on-campus or off-campus). We look forward to seeing you at the New Student Orientation activities in August. Sincerely, D.C. Battiste, Ed. D.
