General Pershing willvisit Porto Rico on a trip of inspection on May 7. This is the latest information received at the headqu-rters of the Military Dis- trict of Porto Rico. According to present plans General Pershing wiil sail from New York for Panama on April 25 on the Transport Northern Pacific and will spend probab- ly five days in the Canal Zone inspect- ing the military establishment there. From Panama it is now planned that the® General will return to New York byway of San Juan stopping here for probably not more that a day. His vis- it here will be entirely official for the purpose of inspecting the Porto Rico regiment.—Porto Rico April 2nd. WORK OF SEWAGE SYSTEM FOR SANTURCE PROGRESSING. System Installed on Carretera to Stop 15; City Working in Talleres District. While many had wondered what had happened to those engaged in construct- ing the sewerage system for Santurce, it appears that this work has beeu rap- idly progressing all the time, but due CHRISTIANSTED, V.l U. 8. A., FRIDAY 23rp APRIL 1920, to the fact thgt the work is not being continuad along the: earretera, but in ji:-e barrio known as* Tallers, and also in Cerra Street the public has not had such a good chance to wateh its progress. “‘Few {realize what a large distriect Ta- lleres covers,’, says Mr. Arturo Rodri- guez, who is Engineer Director of Pub- lic Improvement for the muricipality of San Juan, under the bond issua. *‘lt has been our aim to widen the street snd put in the sewerage together so that each contra:t would be complete when finished. Accordingly, sewerage vas completed to Stop 15, and Ponce de Leon Avenue was widened to that point. After that we branched off to the Tallers district, as conditions were very insanitary in this region, because of the lack of sewerage. A fine drain- age system has already been established which colleets all waters from Cerra Street, and causes them to pass through the big sewer which runs out into Mar- tin Pena Channel. In ®onnection with this job, the big eclay pipe which once served as a dr inage has been changed Lo an immense concrete sewer. ““This section of Santurce is much more densely populated than any one dreams of, said Mr. Rodrigues’’. and presents a much more alarming situa- tion than other parts of Santurce, be- cause those living in the more desira- ble districts imake it a point to have good cesspods, and there is not the danger of infection and disease due to bad drainage that there is in those re- gions where the poorer classes live. There are a great many mosquitoes, it is true’’, he added, ‘‘and there will he un- til the entire sewerage system is com- plete, but we must take the work seec- tion by section, and leave it in good shape before we go on to another sec- tion . 1 ' It is hoped that the work of widening Ponce de Leon Avenue will begin again in June. This contract is to cover the section of Ponce de Leon Avenue from Stop 15 to Stop 21. [n speaking of the work entailed in this contract Mr. Rod- riguez explained that there are 119 houses and lots affected by the widen- ing of the Avenue. ‘“‘All property owners have consented to the plans laid out by the city engineers o‘fice, and have ceded the right of way to the city, but this does not in any way lessen the work which will have to be done by those of us w)o have the work in band’’ said Mr. Rod ‘uez. ‘‘There are 34 houses in this s- .ion that will have to be cut almost in two. It is up to us No. 92, to deliver those hruses to each owner with as many rooms as they had origin- ally, and with beiter sanitary arvange- ments than they had previously, and all this will take time. The work on the sewerage system for this seetion will be going on in the meantime. “"We cannot set any dates’’, said the Engineer Director, but the public mav be perfectly sure that we are doing our best to establish a complete sewerage system all through Santurce as quic' ly as possible, and when it is established residents of that suburb may look for- ward to being less troubled with mos- quitoes’’. —lbid.
