Our note about the Christian Mission special service procession of Sunday evening was somewhat erroneous in that we referred to a week’s services where- as the series of services will extend over a period of two weeks. Ihe procession of which we wrote was really the first of the second week’s devotions. It is learned with considerable regret that changes are being made among the navy medical staff stationed here which includes the transfer of Dr. B. G. Hol- tom to Virginia in next month. Dr. Hol- tom has without doubt won a wide popu- larity during his residence in St. Crix, as oculist, optician, and medical practi- tioner, and his successrul handling of a large majority of cases, and the prompt a.d efficient manner characteristic of his attention to his business as a whole wi.l be sadly missed, and long remembered by numerous grateful people in St. Croix who owe the recovery of their sight or the cure of ailments to his skilful and always ready help. It had been hoped that some exception would have been made to permit of the good doctor re- maining among us a while longer and the suddenness of the news that he is to leave at such short notice has ‘‘knocked the wind out of our sails’’. We, as a peo- ple accustomed to experienced medieal service, cannot but iecl obligated to the Mavy Department for the iiberal con- sideration shown us iu tne number! of medical men detailed for duty in gst. Croix, but it would be strange if we d:d not say that the system wheveby the terms of these men run only a eoupie of yaars at the very most eould be im- proved. or the first no professional man interested in his calling is encour- aged to do his best and develop the u:- most interest in his line when he knows beforehanl that he ean’t accomplish enongh to satisfy himself and those for whom hea is to labor in the time allotted to him; next, as far as a doctor is con- cerned, however skilful he may be, it frequently requires time wherein to study out and become familiar with diseases peculiar to =awy particular place or people, and this is true of these tropical islands where med'cal treatment finds itseif baffied without special ken in some cases: then there is this that many individuals and families suffer from com- plaints which take physicians years to treat successfully because of the time needed to become acquainted with the idiosyneracies in the different cases. Obviously then we can not bhenefit by a change of physician every now and then, since he who is to help us starts from the outset without the opportunity of doing all he can, and must leave just when be is cet and maki g good, and we the sufferers must forever be repeating and describing our derangements to new doctors who have to study us all through afresh and leave us when they have be- gun to help us. We are not essaying to ecriticize but it is only reasonable that since we are concerned we should give an opinion, believing as we do that it is based on sound reasoning, and may, who knows, be given attention, it possible, to the gain of all concerned. Fortunately there is a capable resident physician in Christiansted, a native of whom the community wmay justly be proud. As a rule he is kept as busy as possible, and ez nnot be the family doctor for tke whole is..ud. After having been closed for the last two weeks St. Mary’s Hall will be opened tonight for the presentation of Nurse Majoriejby Mary Miles Minter. We do not know the picture but understand that it meets the taste for lively yet sober and interesting features. The Christiansted Theatre was well attended last night at the continuation of the serial Daredevil Jack which is growing more and wmore attractive, and is received with enthusiasm by the audi- ence every time. e & The work of repairing the landing place which was in a decadent shape for some time is proceeding satisfactori- ly under direction of the Public Works Department. Mr. Chr. Muller is super- vising the work which is affording em- ployment to a good many men who are kept cool most the time being compel- led to stand waist-deep in the water practically all day.
