The fheatre was not well attended last night, due no doubt to the fact that there has been:so much attraction in this line of late. Dear Sir! , In today’s issue of your paper, we see mention of a ‘‘Pontifical High Mass’’ to be celebrated within the near future, in the Protestant Episcopal Church of St. John. Obviously there must be a Pontiff: It would be interesting to know what is his name, and where he resides. Natural- ly, the Rector must be the best informed, so permit me, through this medium, to ask him kindly to enlighten an unin- formed member of that Church, and an ENQUIRER. Mr. Staniey Hodge, Dear Sir;— On my retiring as President of the “‘St, Croix Rucing Association’’, 1 feel it incumbent on me to express pub- licly to you, my high appreciation of your valued services, as Secretary and Treasurer of the said Association, dur- ing the year that is past. Your enthusiastic and untiring efforts for the interest and furtherance of the Sports, and the free srending of your money,-in procuring and putting up fine horses for no other purpose than the upkeep and success of the Assocziation, proves your sterling worth as a Sports- man, and has been fully appreciated by me as its President, and I think ought to have been by every Member of the Association. It is however regretable indeed that this has nnt turned out to be the case, and both you and I have been poorly rewarded for our efforts. I thank you and all others who have* co-operated and assisted in giving the Members and the Public in general three fairly gcod days ‘pleasure with only one subscription of three dollars for tbe geqr, that is one dollar for each race ay. Let us hope, that the newly elected Christiansted Sta? will succeed better, - and that five dollars subseription for two . days races will accomplish more, so that . the good work, we few have begun, will | be carried on by the abler men, to reach the desired standard. All the King’s horses entered at these meetings, however, have been scratched. * London, May 20th—The .dinner of welecome by Pilgrims Society to the American Ambassador, Mr. Geo. Har- vey, last night, was envetlopzd in far deeper interest that usually attends a receptinn to a new Ambassador by this International Club. Not only was it Mr. Harvey’s first public appear- ance since his appointment to the post. But there was a general expectation that he would reveal something of the new administration policy towards Euro- pean affairs. The Ambassador did not disappoint his audience, for he sharply brushed aside any lingering illusions that tie United States would have any relations wha‘ever with the League of Na- tions. He alsoannounced his appointment to represent the President in the Supreme, Council- in the discussion over Silesia. .
