Tke Food Commission met in this town yesterday and conducted itsinvestigation into “he stock of sugar held by merchants which disclosed that some 400 bags are on hind in Christiansted, with littie more than half that amount in Frederiksted mak ng a total of over 600 bags for the island. Tt has been decided that as mas: that sugar was bought at 13 cents the price would again be fixed at 16 to enakle the turning over of the article without loss. Some few holders have smail quantities of sugar bought from the St. Croix Sugar Factory at t veive cents and these will of course gain a negligible increase of profit over thos2 who bought from Bethle- hem at 13 cents, but otherwise it would - appear that the action taken by the commission is about the onlv practical one under the circumstances. A notion by Mr. Svend Jorgensen to have the price of meat (live and slaugh- tered ecattle) increased in yroportion to the 9% cents U. S. currency /hich he claims to be offered for live wveight faiied of passage, thanks to the manly opposition of Mr. Pretto and two other mer.bers of the commission who ab- staired from voting chus leaving rhe question solely in the hands of {four (two members of the commission being absent), and those four all estate owners and naturally expeeted to be interested In the soarving of prices of live stock. I\ appears to us that there is a prepon- derance of representation in ihe commis- sion from the side of the estate owners who can by this advantage have any measure to their benefit sanctioned. Mr. and Mrs. Dußois from Christianstad, . we nevertheiess feel pleasure in the , splendid selection for the new pnst for which we could not think of better or ~ more suitabie appointee than Mr. Du Bois who has so creditably dischirged the arduous auties of his present office as to win the rezard and respect of the «ffi- - cers of his Department, the patients and ~ nurses of the hospital, and the general public.
