Tne first pins, made in this coun'ry were very -crude indeed —merelv a oit of wire ewisted into a knot for a head at one end;~and sharcpeaed to a poiat at the other. In comparison wiith the size of the object manufactured, the operation seems bewild@:ringly numerable; but if there be one process more remarkable than anoiher, it is '‘papering the pins.”’ The papers having been passed through an ingenious -machine w ich, at regular intervals, aceording 40 the size o’ the ' pin, pinches up a feold and pricks a hole in it, are veady to receive the pins. For this purpose there is another ma- chine, worked nd two girls. One feeds the pins, the other the papers. The first part of the machine is.a box about 12 -inches long, 6 inches’ broad, and 4 incfles deep. The bottom in composed of small, sguare steel bars sudficient- ly far apart:to let the shank of the pin fall thgough, but not the head. . I'hese-bars :are just as “saick as Llhe space hetween papered pins. The lower part of the bottom of the box 1S made to-detach itself as soon as the row of pins is complete. Row after row, at regular intervals, is veceived and passed down a corres- ponding set of groqves until it reaches ‘the ready-pricked -paper. By the _nicest possible adjusiment these pins come exactly to their places, and are then pressed into them. - By this method two girls can in one day put. up many thousands of pin papers.*—Barbados Gl%e. : CHRISTIANSTED.
