Parasites such as lice and mites cause considerable loss in the poualtry industry by reduziag ezg priduction ani hinder- ing the growth of all ciasses of poultry. The 2ommon poultiy mites in the West Indies are known by the name of nim- bles; they are entireiy nocturnal in their attacks oa fowis, hiiding in and about the roosung piaces during the day and swarming outs o prey on the birds at night. A cncap and effective: method for destruction of these pests is most desirable. According to Farmers’ Bulletin, No. 801, of the United S ates Department of Agricuiture, experiments made by F. C. Bishop and H. G. Wood have resulted in the discovery of such a means of control. They claim that sodium fluoride, if propecly used, will completely destroy by one applicacion a |l the lice present on any bird. Iwo methods of treatment are recom- mended; che birds may either be dusted or dipped. If dusting is adopted, it ®is advised that pinches of the powdered sodiumn fluoride be placed among the feathers close to the skin on the parts most frequently attacked. Dusting may also be carried out by m=2ans of a shaker, but is said pot to be guite as effective besides being likelyto cause more irrita- tion to the nose and the throat of the operator. The authors however‘seem to conclude that the application of sodium fluoride by means of dipping is the most effective manner of controlling and des- troying these parasites. It is readily dis- solved by stirring. In dipping the fowls, the wings should be held over the back in one hand, and the sow! quickly sub marged in the solution, leaving the head out, while the feathers are thoroughly rubbed with the other hand. The head is then ducked once or twice, and the bird is then released. It is not necessary to keep the fo./l under water longer than twenty to thirty seconds, and the head only an instant. It is estimated that the cost of treat- ment works sut in America at a ltitle less than one cent per bird. The solution though destructive to ‘he mites does not produce any ill effects on the fowls, beyond oeccasinally some temporary irritation of the air passages, but it should be remembered that the material is rather poisonous if taken into the stomach.—Agricultural News, 4ith Sept.
