Call To Order & Opening Remarks UVI Senate Draft Minutes of the UVI Senate Meeting – March 27, 2015 The meeting was called to order at 1:09 pm by the Chair of the UVI Senate, Raquel Silver. Quorum was later established. 2. Approval of the Minutes for February 13, 2015 Senator Barry made a motion to delay consideration of the minutes until the next meeting; it was seconded by Senator Castillo. The motion carried. 3. Matters Arising from the Minutes There were no matters arising from the minutes. 4. Updates Senator McKayle provided the following updates on behalf of Senator Hall: • Pride Week has been a successful week. UVI visited the four public high schools; St. Croix Educational Complex High School, Central High School, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, and Charlotte Amalie High School • Governor Kenneth Mapp served as the guest speaker for the 2015 Charter Day Ceremony and also opened the Literary Arts Festival on St. Croix. • A Town Hall discussion was held with faculty regarding the Ph.D. program. Graduate Council has had an opportunity to review the proposal and has requested additional information before forwarding the proposal to Faculty. • On December 1, 2014, the LCME application was submitted and in February 2015, UVI received confirmation of a site visit scheduled for May 30 – June 3, 2015. • Middle States site visit is scheduled for May 4-6, 2015. UVI was selected as one of the institutions to lead Middle States Accreditation Framework in the next cycle. Senator McKayle commended all those who assisted with this undertaking. 5. UVI Next The UVI Taskforce has been meeting every Monday to conduct reviews and follow ups on programs on the strict scrutiny list. The Taskforce is made up of Senators McKayle, Hall, Lake-King, Mills, Koopmans, Silver and Stuart Ketcham. The Taskforce requested additional information and met with a representative from each program. It has met with CLASS, Student Housing & Student Activities STX, CSS, and the School of Business. The Taskforce will look into establishing a process to conduct year-round evaluations of every unit to reduce the risk of departments or programs being placed on the strict scrutiny list next year. 6. Unfinished Business • Senator Wheatley informed Senate that members of the graduate schools met last month with intentions of forming a Graduate Council. The purpose of the Council is to have a representative body to address and tackle issues unique to graduate students. Members are moving forward with establishing a Graduate Council. Draft Minutes of the UVI Senate Meeting – March 27, 2015 • Chairman Silver updated Senate on the UVI Senate iPads. It was noted that 1 iPad was recorded as lost/stolen and 6 iPads were submitted to ITS; all iPads (11 of 12 purchased) were accounted for. A brief discussion was held on the iPad Policy. A UVI Senate iPad policy was previously drafted by Senator Wheatley. The document was drafted using both the Acceptable Use Policy and the UVI Board of Trustees’ iPad Policy and outlined details specific to UVI Senate. Chairman Silver will resend the updated version of the policy and a vote of approval will be conducted online. 7. New Business No new business was discussed. 8. The Next UVI Senate Meeting The next meeting is scheduled for April 10th. Chairman Silver will send out a reminder. 9. Announcements Employee Service Awards – April 14th and 16th Student Employee Awards Miss UVI – April 11th Academic Awards – April 19th Research Day – April 9th Commencement Regalia – Order deadline is today It’s Raquel’s Birthday! 10. Adjournment Senator Dyer made a motion to adjourn the meeting and it was seconded by Senator Barry; the meeting adjourned at 1:36 pm. Minutes prepared by Jessica Taylor
