FEMA provides grants of up to $10,000 to cover essential household goods like clothing, kitchen items, furniture, etc. You might get a little money for a TV or fancy stereo but, as these are not essential, not much. They will provide for essentials like medical items (eye glasses, dentures, etc) and all sorts of other necessary items. Isle 95 (Doing a great job but please more news and less music). Fax 773-NEWS. Post Office: Not bringing in mail but have FREE post cards to send out to family. Red Cross: Good for food and shelter. Stateside contacts say that they have been somewhat clueless in regards to passing messages along. SBA: Use VITEMA # (773-2244). Provides disaster loans at 4% for items that FEMA does not cover (try FEMA first). The government would rather give you a loan than a grant. If you are declined by the SBA, you fall back to FEMA who hopefully will be able to help. Even so FEMA has some specific grants as noted above. VITEMA (773-2244). Currently VITEMA is the command and switchboard for all emergency agencies. The major (federal) players are moving out ASAP. How de ting? Cable TV: Who knows? Cruzan Rum Distillery: We hope its OK. Current Weather: Nothing significant out there, but we want major reports. The weather channel (via a long distance call) reports three tropical waves off of Africa. They are not organized. St. Thomas airport is trashed. VITELCO: We made a long distance call at 3:30 this morning! Still haven’t been able to call STT but we have heard of others who did. WAPA: Christiansted has power now (feeder 1 and 4). Probably a month or two for more distant areas. We heard A bunch of really big military birds landed today. We suspect that they have all sorts of useful items like medical supplies, tarps, food, water ice. Major cool! Hess clocked winds at 157 before their meter broke. (Hugo broke the meter at 210). Hall of Fame All of we. The STX community is hanging together and responding heroically. The VI Government. Governor Schneider can eat for free for the rest of his life from all the people who want to buy him a meal. Mapp your doing a good job but lighten up. The ice cream folks at five corners who gave it all a way. Our congressman, Frazier, was a major source of information for stateside friends and relatives. Hall of Shame The very few who looted. Those who hire off island when they could hire locally. Irie Ideas DPNR request Naval chain be laid down for the marine community.
