GERAGHTY MILLER, INC. Environmental Services Ground Water Engineering Hydrocarbon Remediation Education August 17, 1992 Caroline Kwan USEPA - Region H 26 Federal Plaza, Room 737 New York, New York 10278 Re: Revision of Appendix C, Tutu Service Station Investigation Work Plan, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands Dear Ms. Kwan: As discussed in a previous telephone conversation between Caroline Kwan, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), and Thomas V. Danahy, Geraghty & Miller, Inc., the field gas chromatograph (GC) in use for the Tutu Service Station Investigation consists of a Photovac 1 OS-Plus. Details regarding the change of the instrument originally specified in the Geraghty & Miller Tutu Service Station Investigation Work Plan, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (March 1992), are discussed below. The Photovac lOS-Plus is an up-graded version of the Photovac 10S-50 and Photovac 1 OS-70. The lamp, detector, and hardware components of the GC remain unchanged, except for the replacement of the Teflon valves with stainless steel valves, which reduces the occurrence of peak cross-contamination. The microprocessor-controlled Photovac 1 OS-Plus with state-of-the-art computer software displays run-time chromotograms on a liquid crystal display (LCD), can download files to an external printer, and has the capability of saving approximately 12 data files per diskette with the disk drive. In addition, the improved computerized software allows three-point calibration curves to be constructed for each analyte allowing more accurate quantitation, compared to the conventional one-point calibration method. Appendix C of the Work Plan has been revised and updated appropriately for the Photovac lOS-Plus GC. The revised Appendix C is enclosed for your review.
