State profiles are arranged alphabetically by state. For each state, these demographic characteristics are reported: state target population (number of persons, 16 years of age and older, not currently enrolled in school who have attended less than 4 years of high school); illiteracy estimate for state; and illiteracy rate. The following information on 1988 adult education participants is provided: total enrollment and national rank; adult basic education (ABE) enrollment and adult secondary education enrollment; percentage of ABE adults served compared to state ABE target population and national rank; and attrition and attrition rate. Additional information on 1988 program year includes participants by ethnic background; program entrants who were employed, unemployed, on welfare, handicapped, institutionalized, limited English proficient, residents of rural areas, and residents of urban areas; and participants' accomplishments, both educational and economic. Data pertaining to 1987 expenditures are given. The number of adults served through volunteer activity and the number of volunteer tutors are cited.
