Leevy of Estate La Grande Prin- cesse, celebrate their golden wedding on which oceasion we join with the'r friends and relatives here and abroad in warm congratulations and all good wishes. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Leevy are among the old- est and most respectable people of this community and it is safe to say are very popular and highly regarded. It is not many who have the opportunity of reach- ing fifty years of wedded life, and still fewer who attain that distinetion with the haleness this happy pair possess. This union has been fruitful too, Mrs. Esman of Recovery Hill being a daugh- ter and former Assistant Judge Leevv, now in Denmark, a son of the happy couple. Another son died in America some time ago. We trust the day will be spent en- joyably and that Mr. and Mrs. Leevy will be surrounded by many well wishers. e— . LOCAL. The Native Brass Band gave an ex- B Bl X A VI cellent coneert on the wharf last night. His Excellgncy the Governor arrived h-re this moruing onthe U S. S. Vixen, and was given a military reception. It is advised that the Governor will deliver an address to the Colonial Council at its meeting this fternoon. Correspondence Editor of the Avis. ; Dear Sir, - I beg kindly for a little space in yvour paper to comment a little on the last election which took place on Friday. As a native I should say it was very sad that Mr. Roberts was again disap- pointed in not securing his election as member of the Colonial Council. I don’t know if Mr. Roberts has a determine disposition, or if he is willing to give up afight peacefully; or it he -still holds to the good old school song which we all in olden days had good faith in and which used to cheer us so much:— “*lf at first you don’t succeed, Try! try! try again.”’ Now, I do not mean in the least to in- sinuate directly on ;Mr. Roberts’ disap- o..atment, waicn can and will in the future happen to others, but, I would like to contest the old school song—with beautiful little verse[ learnt when I ttended the Sunday School of the ‘"Pro- tapt* Episcopal Church of England”’ rars ago. ACTION TAKEN IN DROWNING CASE Gouvernment Attorney George Wash- ington Williams is preparing the Infor- mation to be filed in the Distriet Court of the Virgin Isiands relative to the canse of the drowning of Rosilia gich- ardson and Alberta Vanterpool on Tues- day morning of last week. The Information sets forth that the cause for the accident was due to the “‘eriminally negligent manner in which the said George and Smith manned, managed ¢r manipulated two boats”’ Both men are oGt on bail.—Sparks, Aug. 24th. ‘ ; TELEGR = MS. BT. CROIX STATION. Hoboken, Aug. 24th.—Hire broke out late today on Army Pier No. 5, near which the giant liner ‘‘Leviathan’ is docked, The flames spread rapidly and soon enveloped the structure. The bod- ies of several hundred dead, brought from France, are on Pier No. 4. The mast and some of the woodwork on the tforward part of the Leviathan also caught fire. Faced by a strong south- east wind the flames soon spread to Piers4 and 6 and the evacuftion of all movable property thereon was begun. Berlin, Aug. 24th.—The peace treaty between the United States and Ger many was not signed today as had been intended. London, Aug. 25th.—The reply of the Sinn ¥ein to the offer of the Govern- ment of dominion status for Ireland is on its way from Dublin to London by messenger, it was announced here to- day.
