Jones-Hendrickson, coordinator of the Social Research Center (SRC). The piece is included in a book, QUAN- TITATIVE DATA AND IMMIGRATION RESEARCH, by Stephen R. Couch and Roy Simon Bryce-Laporte, publfshed by the Research Institute on Immigration and Ethnic Studies at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. THREE CONFERENCES During the quarter Dr. S.B. Jones-Hendrickson ON ECONOMICS HELD took part in three professional meetings. In May he was present at a Caribbean Studies Association conference in Curagao where he delivered an address on "Fiscal Policy and Territorial Economic Policy in the Virgin Islands." Early in June he traveled to Antigua to present a paper at a meeting on the theme of "Lesser Developed Countries: Local, Regional and International Perspec- tives," sponsored by the Institute of International Relations at the Uni- versity of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad. His research was on "The Dynamics of Fragmentation: The Case of St. Kitts-Nevis." San Diego was the site in June of a five-day meeting of the Western Economic Association, where Dr. Jones-Hendrickson presented a paper entitled "An Analysis of Individual Income Tax Returns in the USVI" and acted as a panel discussant in the public finance section. COORDINATOR ON The Eastern Caribbean Common Market (ECCM) and EVALUATION TEAM the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority (ECCA) were discussed recently by members of those two institutions and Dr. S.B. Jones-Hendricksgn in Antigua. He was appointed commissioner on a team of three persons delegated to evaluate the role of the ECCA. COORDINATOR'S Dr. Orville Kean, acting director of CRI, and WORKSHOP HELD IN MAY Dr. Clifton E. Marsh, assistant director, were involved in Coordinator's Workshop VII, spon- sored by the Consortjium on Research Training (CORT). The three-day event was held at the College of the Virgin Islands and at the Windward Passage Hotel on St. Thomas. Dr. Kean addressed the group on "The Caribbean Research Institute and Its Implications for the Larger Research Arena." Dr. Marsh served as a program coordinator. In attendance at the workshop were representatives from Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina, this year's coordinating institution, and from colleges in South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. The program was funded by a U.S. Office of Education grant under Title III. HISTORIANS CONFERENCE A week-long conference in early April, which CONDUCTED IN TRINIDAD focused on Caribbean history, was jointly sponsored by the Association of Caribbean Historians and the Department of History at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in St. Augustine, Trinidad. Various aspects of the region's history were discussed by approximately two hundred social scientists. Representing the Institute was Dr. Clifton E. Marsh. BROADCASTS PUBLICIZE Twice in April the Review Committee on Missions CVI MISSIONS & GOALS and Goals of the College of the Virgin Islands (CVI) were discussed on local radio and TV stations. Dr. Roderick Moorehead, executive director of the committee and associate director of continuing education at CVI, and Dr. S.B. Jones- Hendrickson, chairman of the 17-member committee, were interviewed on WVWI-Radio and WBNB-TV. In July personal interviews will be conducted by the committee on all three U.S. Virgin Islands to determine what the com- munity expects of the local educational institution. STAFF INVOLVED IN "A Positive Attitude and a Healthy Economy" DIVERSE PURSUITS was the topic of an address given by Dr. Clif- ton E. Marsh at workshops sponsored by the V.I. Department of Tourism for local airport counter personnel. He spoke in May on St. Thomas and in June on St. Croix as well as discussing the subject on the "Community Affairs" program on local radio station WSTA. Also in May Dr. Marsh spoke to junior high and high school faculty at a mini-conference at Lew Muckle High School on St. Croix, sponsored by the Teacher Corps at CVI's St. Croix Campus. His speech concerned "African- American Studies in a Multicultural Society." Dr. Marsh recently received a research grant from CORT to complete work on his book FROM BLACK MUSLIMS TO MUSLIMS. At the close of the spring semester he received CVI student government awards for being adviser to the 1980 Yearbook and a member of the Black History Committee. “pr. S.B.
