The University Libraries were named in honor of the late Governors Ralph M. Paiewonsky and Melvin H. Evans. As the ninth Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Paiewonsky was instrumental in “upgrading the educational system” throughout the territory. “To meet the need for higher education in the Virgin Islands, Governor Paiewon- sky supported plans for a local college. Under his administra- tion the Col- lege of the Virgin Islands was established in 1962, and by 1972 the four year liberal arts college was designated a Land Grant College. It is now known as the Univer- sity of the Virgin Islands.”* Evans made his mark in Virgin Islands history as the 1st elected Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. He also was the first Virgin Islander named ambassador to Trini- dad and To- bago. Evans was a skillful physician and contributed to the V.I. Health Department. To find out more information about these prestigious Governors and other notable Virgin Islanders, check out the popular publication entitled “Profiles of Out- standing Virgin Islanders” by Ruth Moolenaar, 1992. …
