The vehicle owner must be an individual, not a business. The original title, registration and owner’s ID must be presented to the BMV. If there is a lien on the vehicle to be transferred, a transfer on death cannot be executed until the vehicle is released from the lien. To transfer the ownership to the beneficiary, the beneficiary must submit the title (if available) and certified death certificate of the vehicle’s legal owner(s). If more than one owner is on the title, the beneficiary cannot become the vehicle owner until all owners are deceased. Aug 06, 2025 TRANSFER ON DEATH – PAGE 2 TRANSFER ON DEATH REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility & Ownership Requirements: • Only individual (non-business) vehicle owners are eligible to request a TOD designation. • The vehicle must be titled solely or jointly in the name(s) of the current owner(s) at the time of application. • Any existing lien on the vehicle must be fully paid and released before the vehicle can be transferred to the designated beneficiary. • TOD forms must be submitted and approved prior to the death of the vehicle owner. Applications received after the owner's death will not be processed. Required at Time of TOD Application: • Completed TOD form • Original Vehicle Title • Current Vehicle Registration • Valid, unexpired photo ID of the owner(s) Upon the Owner’s Death, the Beneficiary Must Submit: • Certified death certificate(s) for all legal owners listed on the title • Vehicle Title (if available) • Valid ID of the beneficiary IMPORTANT NOTES: • If multiple owners are listed on the title, ALL must be deceased before the beneficiary can assume ownership under the TOD designation. • The designated beneficiary cannot be changed after the death of the owner(s). To change a TOD designation, a new TOD form must be submitted while all current owners are still alive. • TOD designations do not override joint ownership rights. For example, if the vehicle is titled as "Owner A OR Owner B," the surviving owner retains full ownership rights regardless of the TOD beneficiary. • Do not alter, write on, or modify the title by hand to list a beneficiary. Only officially filed and approved TOD forms will be honored. • An incomplete application or missing documentation will result in rejection or delays.
