"Connersville’’”, we have o tained the following: With the intension of eli- minating, as much as possible, th2 acute ness of the rivalry existing between the Virgin islands Federation of Labor and the St. Thomas Labour Union, arrange- ments had previously been tried to get the members of the two rival factions to work in harmony, but without results. With the arrival of the "‘Connersville’’, however, arrangements to get the two parties to work together had so far suc- ceeded, that the members of the two Oiiantiations ware opidgyed 1 Bunker ing the steamer. The members of the latter organization, however, feeling their superiority over thew rivals, in the manipulation of the task assigned them, through their practicai ability, became dissatisfied with the monetary arrange- ments made—a half-and-half basis-and struck. Their female co-workers were not slow in showing their sympathy for the strikers, the majority of them going likewise "‘on strike.”’ : Some of the officers—male and female —of the twosocieties having be2n inform- od of the troubie, were s-on on the spot. During the ecrisis that developed, one Joe Wenner, a barber, and a member of the Federation of Laber, had a de- cidedly hard time of it, when he was as- saulted by members of the rival gang with knives, stiecks, shovels and even lamps of coal, susiaining some injury, and but for the (imely assistance render- ed him, there is no doubt, but that he would have been ‘‘a dead goose.”’ Wenner whom as we have already stated follows the tonsorial art, had ac- companied, rather reiluctantily, a friend out to the scene of the disturbance. Hearing one of the labourers using rath- er vile language, he had remonstrated with him upon his indecent conduct, even reminding bhim of his advanced age in lite. Instead of molifying the culorit, this rcpremand only ircited him the more, and he began to say what were the intentions of himself and the col- leagues, towafds Wenner and his asso- ciates. Words passed, and an attack followed, against which Wenner defend- 3l LRI & ¥ia ed himself. Other assaillants came cn, one man using a stick with a knife at the ¢nd, which stick Wenner was able (6 wrench out of the hand of his assail- ant. But others were pressing on. Anoth- er "‘hero’’ with flashing eye and upljfted shovel raided edgewise, sprang forw‘ard. breathing threats, and took aim at the victim. But someone standing near, seeing the cowardly attack, struck the uplifted arm. so that t e shovel, losing its equipoise, struck the vietim flatly, though, nevertheless, squarely. Had that shovel fallen otherwise, there ean be no doubt, but that the victim would have immediately perished, or been dis- figured for life. Compiaints by several of the members ot the rival factions against each other were handed ‘n at the Polire Office the next day Hearings of the case having been set for Monday morning at 10 o'clock, the Courthouse and its surround- ings were literaily packed with the fol- lowers of the two organizations, eager to hear the case. Precisely at 10 a. m. the court was called, Judge Chr. Payne pre- siding. So complete and convincing was the evidence against the members of the La- bour Union Association, however, that three of their members—John Lewis, LuKe Jacoubs and Urince Ring with whoin the fight originated—were held in bail of S3OO and SIOO each respectively, for as- sault and battery. From the evidence adduced, it was proven that the offense of the first was with. '‘intent to kill.”’ In locking up the Police records, those of this man were tound to be none '‘too swee!, '”. The bail required has been furnished by the Union. The case is still pending. Again this morning, court was held, the proceedings of which were listened to by eager and excited partisans. —St. Thom- as Mail Notes, July 27th.
