Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Program Policy Statement As of 2021, the US Virgin Islands has a resident population of 105,870, approximately 10% of whom report having a disability that substantially limits one or more aspects of their daily lives. In addition, the USVI Bureau of Economic Statistics finds that, despite recent years of hurricanes and the nationwide pandemic, USVI still hosted over 7 million visitors between 2017 and 2021. Though USVI lacks the statistics for travelers with disabilities, international studies conducted since 2003 suggest as many as 13% may have some form of disability. These numbers emphasize the importance of accessibility for those who live, work or play in our beautiful islands. As both a government agency and a recipient of Federal financial assistance from Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the USVI Department of Public Works is committed to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and other related authorities. …

In addition, the USVI Bureau of Economic Statistics finds that, despite recent years of hurricanes and the nationwide pandemic, USVI still hosted over 7 million visitors between 2017 and 2021. Though USVI lacks the statistics for travelers with disabilities, international studies conducted since 2003 suggest as many as 13% may have some form of disability. These numbers emphasize the importance of accessibility for those who live, work or play in our beautiful islands. As both a government agency and a recipient of Federal financial assistance from Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the USVI Department of Public Works is committed to complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) and other related authorities. This means that DPW must ensure all of its programs, services and facilities are accessible to those with disabilities. Accessible facilities are not limited to the buildings owned and operated by DPW, but also features in the pedestrian right of way (PROW) such as sidewalks, curb ramps, detectable warnings, street crossing, pedestrian signals and DPW-owned parking locations.
