Continued from Ist page. rates of the old Payne Aldrich tariff of 1920, according to members of the House Ways and Means Coinmittee, they will be much higher than in the present Underwond tariff, in some special in- stznces, the rates will even exceed those of the Payne Aldrich measures. The Bill will be introduced probably next Wednesday, and will be taken in the House for consideration after July 4th. A bitter fight is expected over it, es- pecially in the Senate. The states val- uation plan is included in the Bill. The lumber schedule is unsettled and prob- ably will end in a controversy in the House itself. 'The agriculturai rates are about on the level of theold Payne Al: drich rates. Washington, June 25th.——Important developments in an effort to arouse the nation from the period of industrial de- pression, which it is experiencing may be expected as a resuit of the dinner giv- en last night by Presilent Harding to a group of bankers from the middle west. The dinner was followed by a discussion of domestic and international probiems at the cabinet meeting yesterday, and by a conference on the railway situation attended by President Harding. Chair- man Clark, of the interstate commerce commission Secretary Mellon and Direc- tor General of Railways Davis. The sit- uation in which the railways of the na- tions find themselves, was accepted as the “‘emergency problem’” which must be dealt with immediately. At all the sessions of the conference stress has heen laid on the fact that if any of the railways of importance go into the hands of receivers, it would deal another blow at progress toward industrial rehablita- tion. Montreal, June 26th.——1he members of the French Mission under Marshall IPayolle who arrived here on Saturday, were welcomed to Canada- by the acting Prime Minister Mr. Doherty, whilst Senator Beaubien, presiding at the lun- cheon given them, welcomed them on behalf of French Canadians generally. Mr. Doherty spoke of his esteem, his admiration and profound affection for the guests and of his still more profound admiration and sincere love for the coun- try which they represented. Senator Gaston Menier and the President of the Campagni2 Generale Traasatlantique, performed the ceremony of inaugurating the exhibition train, and this took the form of a small model train.
