Fund be paid out in accordance with thegr 5 claims as submitted by Government’s letter of May 21, 1920 plus interest at the rate of 5% p. a., from the 3lst. of March, 1918, until the day of payment. His literacy ought to teach him that this newspaper is open to all of its subscribers and readers, especially those who are not afraid of their own shadows to appear in print, as I beheve many are, to keep his power and criticiem to him- self and allow others to have their | chance. Croix Avis:— t There has been some talk and ef- fort toward getting a water supply for St. Croix, and we all ‘agree that such a thing would be of immense benefit to the community. But it does beat my under- standing that the same very people who are kicking at this and that, and want everything to come to their doors, fail to realize their own responsibility or to live up to their pretensions even in the care of their own possessions. Here in this drought I have gone around town and counted on the fingers of my one hand the number of houses in anv street that had spouting and, where they had, were provided with receptacles tor the water which, during the recent days’ rain- fall has simply been allowed to run in the gutter and go to. waste. I have noted institutions owned by organizations hav- ing funds and which ought to be alive in these matters no better off in this respect. If ten per cent of the properties in town had spouting around - their roofs and moderately large cisterns it is possible that this -town 'could =~ withstand a drought of -a year. As it is, the people are from place to place begging for water which is more often sold, while rents are mounting up without the slightest regard to what conveniences are provided in return Yours : SUFFERER. TO THE FOOD-COMMISSION, THE POLICE, OR WHOEVER IS AUTHOR- IZED TO INVESTIGATE INTO THE VIOLATION OF THE PROVISIONS OF THE FOOD ORDINANCE. A grocery in this town owned by a member of the Food Commission lis charging 20 cents a pound for raw su- gar, or four cents more than ruled by the Food Commission of which this hon- orable personage is a member. If this grocery continues to impose on the pub- lic and does not readjust the price of the raw sugar to 16 cents a pound as re- quired by the Food Commission, we would like to know what is principle, and whether such dealing is a sample of the honesty of shat business, and what redress we have. : : COOKS.
