The strike began in Hull on July 2nd, with a walkout of 7,000 men, and then extended to a dozen other ports and involved 40,000 workers. The ports affected included Manchester, Liverpool, Avonmouth and small towns, but did not affect South- ampton or Swansea. Work was resumed in some ports by yesterday, hut in others the strikers were still holding out. It is believed, however, that the whole strike will terminate by the end of this week. Paris, July 11lth. —The Senate this af- ternoon ratified the Washington treaty for the limitation of naval armaments, with ut reservations by a vote of 287 to 3. The Senate ratified the four-power Pacific pact by an unanimous vote. Washington, July i2th.-—-One hundred and seventy eight German submarines were ‘.ostin action’’ during the war, ac- cording to an othicial report just reczived by the Navy Department. The loss in personnel is given as 6,361, of whom 515 were officers. These fizures are believed by officials here to b the first authend? information on this subject ;to be obtain- ed. Four years were consumed, the au- thor of the report asserts, in checking official records and interviewing mem- bers of the Germsn admiralty who had charge of undersea craft. (Depth charges accounted for 37 submarines, fixed mines foe 36, fights with enemy submarines 20, engine and other trouble 14, tcrpedo,boat destiny °rs and subehasers 13, accidental r-mmiag eight, armed fishing craft six, aeroplanes (bombing silx) and anti-sub- marines =lx. 21 submarines were demol- -Ished, oc ownerwise disposed of, to pre- vent their capture by the enemy.
