Thanksgiving Day. HE President of the United States T having designated Thnursday, the thirtieth day of November as a day of national thanksgiving, supplication and devotion, I, HENRY H. HOUGH. Gov- ernor of the Virgin Islands of the United States of America do earnestly recom- mend that the people of these islands gather at their family altars and in their houses of worship on that day to render thanks to God for the bounties they have enjoyed and to petition that these may be continued and increased in the year before us. In the beginning of our country the custom was established by the devout fathers of observing annually a day of thanksgiving for the bounties aand pro tection which Divine Providence had ex- tended throughout the year and it is emirently fitting that the custom should be perpetuated. No country and no pzople are without their trials and tribulations, no country and no people are without the bounties and protection of the Divine power,-—let us all on this day of Thanksgiving seek only to remember the latter. Let each heart be searched, for the benefits and blessings received at the hands of the Almighty and for these let us lift up our hearts in an appropriate expression of appreciation and gratitude. The terrors of war have passed us by and we are living at peace with the world at large, we have been spared the destruc- tion due to hurricanes, earthquakes, and tidal waves, the deva tation due to pesti- lence, plagues, epidemics and serious illnesses, we have had neither drought nor famine, we have been blessed with the protection of law and order. We are a God-loving people, religioasly inclined, living in a spirit of amity and brotherly love. Let us therefore celebrate this day of Thanksgiving as sincerely as did the originators of the custom when it was first established. IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here- unto set my hand and caused the seal of the Government of the Virgin Islands of the United States to be affixed.
