Gre t mountain peaks as well as the sources of rivers and other natural fea- tures are regarded by the Hindus*as sacred. For this reason they will not permit Europeans to approach Everest through their territory. The expedition therefore will have to take the more roundabout route through Tibet, which is now open. The greatest difficulty anticipated in the ascent is breathing the rarefied cir high above the general level of the earth. To be sure aviators have flown at alti- tudes far above the peak of this moun- tain but they were not obliged to put forth any muscular effort while in the tenuous atmospheric strats. Experi- ence has thought that physical effort of any kind is extremely exhausting at high altitudes; in several instances ex- perienced climbers have been compelled to give up when within a few hundred yards of the summit of high Himaldyan peaks.—lbid. Chaul- woogra oil, which has long been used, has given better results than any other medicine ever tried but it is not an in- fallibie remedy. At the instance of the U §S. Public health service Prof. L. E. Dean of the chemical department of the College of Ha- waii some time ago under.ook to iso- late the active principles of Chaalmoo- gra oil in order that the treatment of leprosy might b 2 simplified. He has succeeded by preparing an ‘‘ethyl es- ter’’ from the oil. Prof. Dean’s discov- ery is hailed by the public health ser- vice, as '‘the greatest thing Hawaii has yet given to the world. ¢ The new remedy has given such good results that Hawaiian lepers submit themselves willingly to treatment. In each of 59 cases treated with it the dis- ease was overcome to such an extent that the patients were released on pa- role. After a year no symptioms of recurrence were found in any of the cases Because of these results the pub- lic health service is convinced that a .reliabre cure for the disease has at last been found.—The Pathfinder, November 27th.
