Schools sponsor student leadership activities to provide students with vital experience in exercising a voice in matters of common concer, reconciling diverse interests, and selecting leaders. Student leaders are a positive influence on their peers, modeling good character and scholarship in and out of the classroom, and serve as change agents to improve the overall climate and academic performance levels of their schools. Student leaders do not automatically develop sound leadership skills and require trained, dedicated faculty advisers to help them develop the essential traits and characteristics of a leader and to provide the positive experiences necessary to expand their skills and foster their paths to becoming effective leaders. The support of school administrators and faculty, parents, and community members is necessary to help ensure the successful education of all emerging student leaders. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kenneth E. Mapp, Governor of the Virgin Islands of the United States, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, do hereby proclaim the week of April 16-22, 2017, as Virgin Islands Student Leadership Week in support of National Student Leadership Week, and I urge the residents of the Virgin Islands to seek opportunities to recognize student leaders in our schools and Proclamation — National Student Leadership Week 2017 support their training and activities as they prepare themselves for their future stations as leaders of our territory and the nation. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and caused the Seal of the Government of the United States Virgin Islands to be affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas Virgin Islands, on this _ ||! “Uay of April 2017, A.D.
