Sandy Hook, July 15th.—Great Pri- tain zained her ftirst hold in forty-nine years on the America Cup today when Sir Thomas Lipton’s challenger ‘‘Sham- rock IV.”” won the first race of the 1920 Regatta afrer the defender '‘Resolute”’ had been torced out of the racing by an accident to her rigging. The challen- ger must win two more races out of a possible maximum of four if sheis to achieve Sir Thomas Lipton’s dream of taking the bottomless pewter cup trophy back to Britain. The ‘‘Resolute’’ must w n 3 out of 4 to retain the cup which has been in possession of the New York Yach: Club since 1851. The se- cond race will start at noon on Satur- day. ‘‘Shamrock IV.’s’’ victory was won in the face of what had scemed certain dereat. The ‘‘Resolute’” had taken the lead at the start and held it by an ever widening margin until as she swooped within half a mile of the turning mark fifteen miles {rom th= start Spectators on the great fleet of pleasure crafts saw her great area of bellying canvas shiver and begin to sink fluttering down her mast. A sudden gust had, snapped her throat hal-yards and a second later the jaws of her gaff were shattered beyond repair. Captain Adams sent two men aloft to repair the damage while th~ stricken yacht limped slowly around the turning mzark nearly five minutes ahead of ““‘Shamrock IV’’. A few moments la- ter the men descended and reported the extent of the damage and Captain Adams gave the order to furl the “‘Resolute’s’’ mainsail and gave up the race. More than one hundred - craft ranging in size from an ocean liner to tiny power boats that were ' almost lost in the maze which follow- ed the contenders over the 30 mile - course that started even with the Am- brose Lighrship and took them fifteen miles southwest by soutn along the New ~ Jersy Coast and back. ‘‘Shamrock IV.”’ - was given a mighty ovation of scream- ing whistles and sirens as she flashed . across the line at twenty-six minutes ' thirty-tive seconds past four o’clock hav- ' ing completed the course in four hours - twenty-five minutes twelve seconds. The i weather was anything but satisfactory . for ayacht race, the sky was heavily . overcast and what little breeze was stir- ring was fitful. : | Aboard the steam yacht ‘‘Victoria” . The matter was referred to the ~ West Indian Committee of the Board. . Notice of application was filed by the - Railway Association of "Canada for an ~ increase of 30% on the existing railway | freight rates.
