PRT 130 –Process Technology I- Equipment Fall Semester 2008 Class Time and Location: Tuesdays & Thursdays – 5:30 to 6:45 P.M. @ the HOVENSA Training School – Room B-115B. Course Description: Process Technology I – Equipment (PRT 130) is one of 11 core courses in the Applied Science in Process Technology Program being offered by the University of the Virgin Islands and sponsored by HOVENSA. This two-year program has been created to train students for careers as Process Technicians in the petrochemical industry. Process Technology I – Equipment provides an introduction in the use of common process equipment including drums, furnaces, boilers, and other process vessels; pumps, compressors, blowers, fans and other rotating equipment. This course will include the identification, terminology and basic functions of these process equipment and the scientific principles associated with them. The more an operator knows about their equipment, the better they can take care of it. Course Objective: The students will apply the knowledge acquired in this course to operate equipment on the job, perform minor maintenance, and prepare equipment for repair/replacement and inspection and condition monitoring. Required Materials: • Texts: Process Technology - Equipment and Systems - Charles Thomas • A three-ring binder for handouts and notes • Access to a Personal Computer and the Internet Grading: There will be a minimum of three tests that will count as a total of forty (40) percent of the final grade, each being of equal value. Quizzes, home assignments, class participation will count as thirty five (35) percent of the final grade. The final exam will be a comprehensive exam that will count as twenty five (25) percent of the overall grade. The dates of the tests have already been tentatively scheduled. If you miss a test, you must present a doctor’s certificate in order to receive a makeup test. No other make-ups will be given. An unexcused absence during a test will result in a grade of zero. Summary of how your Final Grade will be determined: In-class and Take Home Tests - 40 Percent (%) Quizzes/Homework Assignments/Class Participation - 35 Percent (%) Final Exam - 25 Percent (%) 100 % Grading Scheme showing assignment of letter grades: 95 - 100 A 90 - 94 A- 87 - 89 B+ 83 - 86 B 80 - 82 B- 77 - 79 C+ 73 - 76 C 70 - 72 C- 65 - 69 D+ 60 - 64 D 0 - 59 F Course Requirements: Classes are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 P.M. All students are required to attend class regularly and punctually. Students are also expected to participate fully in class discussions and problem solving sessions. Class Policies 1. Class attendance is expected. 2. Working together on homework outside of class is permitted as long as each party is contributing and genuine learning is taking place. Copying homework or “checking” and changing answers is not acceptable behavior and will be treated as an Honor violation. 3. Reading assignments and homework will be discussed in class. To encourage preparation, homework will be occasionally collected for grade. Work turned in late is unacceptable and will not be graded. Things that irritate this instructor: 1) Coming to class late. Class starts at 5:30 2) Pagers and cell phones that ring in class- Make sure that they do not go off during class. 3) Students wandering in and out of class- Please confine getting up and down from your seat until announced breaks. 4) Working on another course during this class period. 5) Having two conversations going on at one time. 6) Not reading the assigned material before class starts. Bottom Line I am here to help you learn about mechanical equipment used in a refinery. Knowing the equipment will make you a better operator and enhance your safety awareness. In order for you to learn, you must come to class prepared and willing to participate.
