Damascus, Syria, June 24th.- An at- tempt was made yesterday to assassinate Geveral Gouraud, commander of the French army in the east, as he was travelling in an autemobile from Damas- cus to the Sea of Galilee, in northern Pa- lestine. The assault was committed by bandits. The general was uninjvred but bad a narrow escape, bullets passing through his leit sleeve, The governor of Damascus, who was with him in the automobile was shghtly wounded. N, BEe ex- pressed much pleasure at seeirg such a large gathering and hoped ihe evening would be an enjoyabie one. The first item on the progran. was a one step. It made an instant success be- ing applauded several times. Through- out the program continuous applause greeted the band at the end of each item.
