Resolution of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands Approving Tuition Overload Charge Policy Effective Fall 2016 WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands (hereinafter “the University”) is committed to ensuring that charges for tuition and fees, for instruction and other services received by its students, are paid in a fair and appropriate manner to ensure the financial sustainability of the institution; and WHEREAS, no written policy currently exists at the University concerning the payment of tuition overload fees; and WHEREAS, it has been the University’s practice of allowing undergraduate students who are enrolled for a semester with seventeen or more credits to pay the same tuition rate as those enrolled for a semester with twelve to sixteen credits; and WHEREAS, in response to a request made by President David Hall, a review was conducted by the University of undergraduate students who enrolled in seventeen or more credits in the academic years 2012 through 2014; and WHEREAS, after reviewing the tuition overload charge structure used by our peers, aspirational peers and other universities, it became clear that the University is not following standard tuition practices among universities and colleges. The administration therefore proposes a policy for the assessment of an overload charge to correct this situation; and WHEREAS, on October 8, 2015, the Finance and Budget Committee of the Board of Trustees reviewed the proposed policy and voted to recommend, to the Board of Trustees, the approval of the proposed policy, which would assess an overload charge to all undergraduate students. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: Section 1. The Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands hereby approves, effective in the Fall Semester 2016, the policy that would assess an overload charge for all undergraduate students, resident and non-resident, as follows: a) Undergraduate resident students pay $147.00 per credit hour rate for each credit hour enrolled of seventeen or more per semester. b) 2. Undergraduate non-resident students pay $ 221.00 per credit hour rate for each credit hour enrolled of seventeen or more per semester. Resolution – UVI Tuition Overload Charge Policy 1 Section 2. The Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands authorizes the President and Vice-President for Administration and Finance, the CFO, to take the necessary action to implement the foregoing policy for the payment of tuition overload fees.
