Bachelors of Arts in Social Sciences- Secondary Education Major 4-Year Suggested Course Sequence (rev. August 2019) Please note that this is only a suggested course sequence. Circumstances may cause you to complete the program in a different sequence. However, you must adhere to requirements regarding prerequisites for admission into certain courses and the timing of when particular courses must be taken during your completion of the major. Also, please note that all courses are not offered every semester. Please read the University catalog carefully for an explanation of major requirements and when courses are offered. As the major in Social Sciences/Secondary Teacher Preparation is essentially a double major – both in the Social Sciences and in the preparation for teaching those disciplines on the secondary level - it includes more courses and thus demands greater time to complete than a single area major. Bachelors of Arts in Social Sciences- Secondary Education Major 4-Year Suggested Course Sequence (rev. August 2019) Please note that this is only a suggested course sequence. Circumstances may cause you to complete the program in a different sequence. However, you must adhere to requirements regarding prerequisites for admission into certain courses and the timing of when particular courses must be taken during your completion of the major. Also, please note that all courses are not offered every semester. Please read the University catalog carefully for an explanation of major requirements and when courses are offered. As the major in Social Sciences/Secondary Teacher Preparation is essentially a double major – both in the Social Sciences and in the preparation for teaching those disciplines on the secondary level - it includes more courses and thus demands greater time to complete than a single area major. The completion of the major requires taking courses during at least two summer semesters or a heavier load during the regular semesters. Please note, however, that registering for a course load of > 17 credits requires permission from the Dean and meeting certain GPA requirements as detailed in the catalog. These credits do NOT count towards the minimum of 120 credits needed for graduation. ***Students should formally apply to the Secondary Teacher Preparation Program before taking courses beyond EDU 221 and EDU 230. Admission to the secondary teacher preparation major, which begins with Education 250, is by written application. In order to qualify for admission, students must meet the following criteria (a) to (e), and have earned a minimum grade of “C” in the courses listed in (a). Students are required to: (a) complete both the general education and education requirements in: -Communication (COM 119, COM 120) -English (ENG 120, ENG 201) -Science (SCI 100 and 200, or two semesters of Laboratory Science) -Mathematics (MAT 140 or MAT 143) and one of the following: MAT 153, MAT 235, MAT 232) -Education Courses EDU 221 and EDU 230 (b) maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.50. (c) pass the English Proficiency Exam. (d) pass the Computer Literacy Exam. (e) complete a pre-admission interview. **** Those who intend to meet certification requirements for teaching in the United States Virgin Islands should are required to complete History of the Virgin Islands (HIS 342). Those who do not plan to teach in the public schools may substitute this course for another Social Science Major Elective. These electives are listed under Section E of the Social Science Major *****. Prerequisites for EDU 469/497 Student Teaching in the Secondary School. All education courses required for the major are must be completed prior to student teaching. A minimum grade of C is required in each course.
