Washington on the islands of St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Johnny witnessed the landing of the first aircraft to visit St. Croix, The Santa Maria only days before Charles A. Lindbergh's epic flight of The Spirit of St. Louis to St. Thomas. The Santa Maria landed on St. Croix in Prosperity pasture. Johnny even got a peek at the rattan chairs in the aircraft. Johnny got his first job as a maintenance worker at the powerhouse on Strand Street in Frederiksted and was later employed at the weather station at Manning's Bay. Johnny along with over one hundred men from St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas were inducted into the United States Army on 1 September 1944 and received their basic military training in Puerto Rico. …

Washington on the islands of St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Johnny witnessed the landing of the first aircraft to visit St. Croix, The Santa Maria only days before Charles A. Johnny along with over one hundred men from St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas were inducted into the United States Army on 1 September 1944 and received their basic military training in Puerto Rico. Several months later they were shipped to New Orleans, Louisiana and stationed at Camp Plauche. Johnny was assigned to the 873rd Port Company, Transportation Corps and sometime after arrival in New Orleans Louisiana, he was then transferred to the 872nd Port Company, Transportation Corps as a Heavy Wheel Truck Driver. Johnny along with other Virgin Islanders, which were a part of the 873rd and 872nd Port Company, Transportation Corps were put on military orders to Hawaii where they engaged in rigorous training in preparation for the invasion of Japan saved only by the surrender of the Japanese. Johnny attained the rank of Private First Class while serving in the United States Army. He received various citations while serving in the United States Army; Overseas Service Bar, Proclamation — John “Johnny Tranberg Day 2016 American Theatre Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal. Johnny was honorably discharged from the United States Army on December 21, 1945. He is a current member of the Bromley Berkeley American Legion Post #133 in Frederiksted, St. Croix, and the oldest registered Veteran within the shores of the United States Virgin Islands. Johnny is an outstanding citizen of our Virgin Islands and still resides on the island of his birth on St. Croix, Virgin Islands. NOW THEREFORE, I, the Kenneth E. Mapp, Governor of the Virgin Islands of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 25, 2016 as John “Johnny” Tranberg Day. I call upon all people of the Territory to celebrate Mr. Tranberg’s life, and his contributions to our culture and to thank him for his service to our country and territory. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Governor of the Virgin Islands of the United States to be affixed at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands this.2° day of April, 2016, A.D. pay Ne Kenneth E.
