LIST OF THE COCCOIDEA SPECIES (HOMOPTERA) OF THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS 0^0 D J77 •P&uS United States Department of Agricul ture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service PI ant Protection and Quaranti ne APHIS 81-42 September 1983 * United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library Advancing Access to Global Information for Agriculture LIST OF THE COCCOIDEA SPECIES (HOMOPTERA) OF THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS Abstract Introduction U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library JUN 1 2 2015 Received Acquisitions and Metadata Branch Acknowl edgements Prepared by S. Nakahara, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, Insect Identification and Beneficial Insect Introduction Institute, Agricultural Research Service, USDA, BARC-West, Bel tsvi lie, MD 20705 Eighty-nine species of Coccoidea representing 56 genera and 8 families are recorded from the United States Virgin Islands. Island distributions and hosts are presented for each species. In their lists of the insect fauna of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands (USVI), Beatty (1944) reported 35 nominate Coc- coidea species and Miskimen and Bond (1970) reported 50 nomi- nate Coccoidea species. Apparently, the Coccoidea faunas for the other two major islands in USVI, St. John and St. Thomas, have not been published. Based on information compiled up to June 30, 1981, from records and slide material in the U.S. National Museum (Natural History) (USNM) , agricultural quarantine interception records, research of literature, and recent collections principally by C. E. Miller on St. Croix in 1978, 89 species of Coccoidea in 56 genera and 8 families are known to occur in USVI; St. Croix 78 species, St. John 21 species, and St. Thomas 64 species. Although Saissetia oleae (Olivier) was reported from USVI by Beatty (1944) and Miskimen and Bond (1970), this species is not included here. Previously identified material of _S. ol eae from USVI in the USNM examined by the author was either _S. miranda (Cockerell and Parrott) or _S. negl ecta De Lotto. Moreover, the author has not seen the species in recently collected material. The host plants are presented for each species. However, only a few names of host plants were found for some of the poly- phagous species such as Chrysomphal us aonidum (L.). Although Miskimen and Bond (1970) state that species indicated here with an asterisk (*) attack many plants, infest a wide variety of ornamentals and fruit trees, or are common in St. Croix, they did not include the names of the plants in their paper. The taxa are arranged al phabetical ly by family, genus, and species. Synonyms that appear only in the cited references are included in this list. I am grateful to C. E. Miller, Plant Protection and Quarantine, APHIS, USDA, Hyattsville, Maryland, for collection records from St. Croix, and agricultural quarantine interception records at the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico. I thank R. H. Foote, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, ARS, USDA, Washington D.C., for reviewing the manuscript and suggestions, and A. B. Hamon and E. Ostanik, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Gainesville, for collection records. 1 ACLERDIDAE Acl erda sacchari Teague DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix HOSTS: Panicum barbinode ASTEROLECANI IDAE Asterol ecani um bambusae ( Boi sduval ) Hi ski men and Bond 1970 DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix, St. John HOSTS: Bambusa, B. vulgaris mi 1 iare mi 1 iare ( Boi sduval ) DISTRIBUTION: St. Thomas HOSTS: Bambusa vulgaris mil iare robustum Green DISTRIBUTION: St. Thomas HOSTS: Bambusa vulgaris pustul ans* ( Cockerel 1 ) Beatty 1944, Miskimen and Pond 1970 DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix, St. Thomas HOSTS: Amaranthus, Annona muricata, A. squamosa, Pauhinia tomentosa, Cassia fistula, Flacourtia ramontchi , Ficus (fig), Jacaranda, Hibiscus, Mangifera indica, Nerium oleander, Rosa, Stenolobium stans 2 CEROCOCCIDAE Cerococcus dekl ei Kosztarab and Vest Kosztarab and Vest 1966 DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix, St. Thomas HOSTS: Hi bi scus COCCIDAE Ceropl astes ci rri pedi formi s Comstock Miskimen and Bond 1970, Gimpel et al . 1974 DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix HOSTS: Coccoloba uvifera, Malpighia, Mangifera indica, Musa paradisiaca sapientum, Psidium guajava denudatus Cockerel 1 See Ceropl astes rusci (Linnaeus) dugesi Lichtenstei Gimpel et al . 1974 DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix HOSTS: Annona fl oridensi s* Comstock Beatty 1944, Miskimen and Bond 1970 DISTRIBUTION: St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas HOSTS: Anacardium occidentale, Annona muricata, A. squamosa, Pucida buceras.
