Biology Program Description At the University of the Virgin Islands, we offer a flexible program of study in biology. Thanks to the large proportion of science and mathematics electives incorporated into our degree requirements, students can, with help from their advisors, design their own course of study. As a teaching oriented institution, we offer small class sizes with plenty of opportunity for one-on-one contact between student and professor. Most of our students choose a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, which entails about 60 credits of required science and mathematics courses and 30 credits of science and mathematics electives, while allowing students to choose their own humanities electives (18 credits) and other general education requirements. In addition to course requirements, BS Biology majors also take a comprehensive exam (about 1 hour long) near the end of their course of study. …

Biology Program Description At the University of the Virgin Islands, we offer a flexible program of study in biology. Thanks to the large proportion of science and mathematics electives incorporated into our degree requirements, students can, with help from their advisors, design their own course of study. As a teaching oriented institution, we offer small class sizes with plenty of opportunity for one-on-one contact between student and professor. Most of our students choose a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, which entails about 60 credits of required science and mathematics courses and 30 credits of science and mathematics electives, while allowing students to choose their own humanities electives (18 credits) and other general education requirements. In addition to course requirements, BS Biology majors also take a comprehensive exam (about 1 hour long) near the end of their course of study. Students may also pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, which entails about 64 credits of science and mathematics courses, a predetermined program of humanities courses (36 credits), and other general education requirements. We also offer BA and BS degrees in Marine Biology. Mission Statement The biology and marine biology program is committed to helping students excel academically and achieve productive careers through programs in academics, research and community service. The program provides BS and BA degrees in Biology and Marine Biology. Our degree offerings are augmented by opportunities to participate in internships as well as research at both the local and national level. The faculty is dedicated to preparing our students for successful, productive postgraduate and professional careers. They are also committed to lifelong learning and scientific research, academic and pedagogical advancement, and outreach to the local community.
