The Mulford biolhgical expedition to Suth America leports finding there a primitive tribe of Indians who are thought to be descendants of a peuple conguered by the Incas nany years ago. They were disecovered on the liqui river in the Amazon ba dn hiving in community houses holding 25 to 49 faumiies. The women are not slaves or n2asts of burden like women of neighboring tribes, but are retognized by the males astheir equals in every respecl. Al are astonishingly pnaat and clean. Al work 1s divd:d up equally among both sexes. Many of the women own thair own €anoes and o on long hunting trips like the men. Among these Indians there is no mourning for the dead because they be- lieve the departed go to “*a beautiful place.”” Their chief superstition is that a “*devii-devil”’ lurks in the jungles al- ways ready to seize them.
