We consider that the public is entitled to a word from Mr. Morris Davis, Presi dent of the Federation of Laber in re gard 10 a statement communicated to this paper to the effect that he had se- cured wages of $1.15 per 8 hour day for the members of his organization as pub- lished some time ago. We accep'ed the news in good faith at the time, but sub sequent events purporting to dispute the accuracy of it, we feel constrained- upon to ask Mr. Ddvis to take a stand in this ques lon which ought to be authoritative- ly answered by him. : LOCAL. We learn with much pieasure of the promotion of District Chief of Police Espersen to the rank oi Senior District Chief, ard congratulate this cpergetic officer on the long deserved recognition to which we are sure everybody feels he is justly entitled. The Editor of the ‘'St. Croix Avis.’’ Dear Sir:— There are some persons who sei- dom or never attena moving picture shows, and their only objection is, that to witness a murden scene, or a burglar enlering a house etc., may tempt one to practice the same things in life. For the benefit of those I ask you to publish ithe {following taken from ‘‘Current Opinion’’ for September 1920; ~ “"As for the people who say that mur- der stories incite to murder, one is tempt- ed merely to the reckless reply that their criticisms of murder stories really-might. But it will be enough for most of us to know that the temptations to erime are in life and not in literature or any other art; and, if a man does not steal because he is too poor to afford food, he will hardly do it merely because he is suffi- ciently rich to afford cinemas. We also know that any attempt to exclude mur- der stories would not be an attack on the lowest literature but on the highest literature. ‘Hamlet’ is a murder story; ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Othello’ are murder stories. Dante deals with murderers, as well as with all the other erimes that are and are not printed in the police news. In the Bible the story of mankind begins with a murder, and ends with the most awful of all possible murders.....l do not know what else the object of arbi trary cinema censorship could be, unless it were to prevent mankind from dis- covering the existence of death.’’ o THE CRITIC.
