FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GOVERNOR MAPP PROLCAIMS MILTON “MILT” NEWTON DAY AUGUST 7TH, 2015 (August 7, 2015, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands) Governor Kenneth E. Mapp, proclaimed August 7, 2015, as Milton “Milt” Newton Day in the United States Virgin Islands Milton Miles “Milt” Newton was born on August 25, 1965, on the island of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and was raised in St. Thomas and Washington, D.C. He is the son of the late Cleopatra Newton. Milton M. Newton’s early education began at the Leonard Dober Elementary School, Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School, and the Wayne N. Aspinall Junior High School. He later went on to attend the Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C. Milton received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Master’s of Science Degree in Sports Administration from the University of Kansas. He also played basketball for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. After his college career ended, Milton played basketball professionally in Australia with the NBL’s South East Melbourne Magic and the Rockford Lightning. …

Mapp, proclaimed August 7, 2015, as Milton “Milt” Newton Day in the United States Virgin Islands Milton Miles “Milt” Newton was born on August 25, 1965, on the island of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and was raised in St. Thomas and Washington, D.C. He is the son of the late Cleopatra Newton. Milton M. Newton’s early education began at the Leonard Dober Elementary School, Jane E. Tuitt Elementary School, and the Wayne N. Aspinall Junior High School. He later went on to attend the Calvin Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C. Milton received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Master’s of Science Degree in Sports Administration from the University of Kansas. He also played basketball for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. After his college career ended, Milton played basketball professionally in Australia with the NBL’s South East Melbourne Magic and the Rockford Lightning. He also played for the Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association. Following his playing days, Milton M. Newton turned to the business side of basketball, rising through the ranks with the Denver Nuggets, USA Basketball, and the Philadelphia 76ers. He then joined the National Basketball Association League Office and was instrumental in launching the NBA’s Development League. Milton joined the Washington Wizards as their Director of Player Personnel in 2003, and soon thereafter was promoted to Vice President. He was instrumental in directing the scouting department for the organization and played a significant role in the draft and free agent acquisitions. Milton created and instituted the Washington Wizards’ comprehensive scouting database, and led their pre-draft efforts and NBA draft prospect workouts during his tenure with the Wizards. In 2013, Milton interviewed with Flip Sanders, the Minnesota Timberwolves minority owner and President of Basketball Operations, for the vacant General Manager position. In September of that year he was hired as their General Manager. Milton M. Newton joins a list of decision makers in the National Basketball Association along with Detroit’s Joe Dumars, Brooklyn’s Bill King, Toronto’s Masai Ujiri, New Orleans’ Dell Demps, Charlotte’s Rod Higgins and Rich Cho, and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Doc Rivers. Governor Mapp noted in his Proclamation, “Milton is heavily involved in charitable efforts and assists with the NBA’s “Basketball without Borders” global basketball and community outreach program in South Africa and Senegal. Milton hosted four “Giving Up the Love’ basketball clinics in the Virgin Islands to teach fundamental skills to youths ages 8 through 18 in conjunction with theVirgin Islands Basketball Federation in which he is a consultant.” “Milton M. Newton has made the Virgin Islands, especially the island of St. Thomas, proud of his many career accomplishments and contributions to our Virgin Islands, which have significantly impacted the youth not only in the Virgin Islands, but the world. Accordingly, it is fitting and appropriate that we all honor and recognize Milton’s contributions”, concluded Governor Mapp. ###
