Upon the ground that he would not admit into his home a sheet that adver- tises books of an immoral nature, the Revd, Joseph W. Daily, C.5.5.R., has requested us to dlscontln?e sending the Avis to the Holy Cross' Rectory. We would like to have it understood here o # that we are not aware of the correctness of the charge of advertising immoral literatvre, and must insis. upon being authorized to accept advertisements from any source when the same are paid fer, dea! with matter not repugnant to the public culture, and do not represent a fraudulent business. Mr. Mayhew, who has recently published in this paper that he is selling certain books, assures us that those boonks are entered accord- ing to Act of Congress at the office of the Librarian at Washington, D. C., and therefore couid not, and do not treat on matters of an immoral characzer. There’s the pro and con of it. We can not tell Mr. Mayhew what books he shall sell or advertise, nor can we reasonably be expected to restrict his privilege of advertising in our paper hecause his subject may be distasteful to some par- ticular religious sect. The Avis is purely interdenominational and in this respect is not unlike many leading papers in the United States whose liberty to accept ad vertisements and contributions from the publie, 1s not ireroached upon. We trust the public will see this matter in a broadminded light and understand once forall thatitis notin the piace of the news- paper toatiempt to bias the public mind or enslave its ideas inrto any special groove on religious matters, 1t being mainly belief that influences rehigious decision one way or the other and in our opinion and that of authorities on mental phil- osophy, belief is not controllable even by its possessor, and therefore ought not become an object of criticism. This paver * is open alike to ali, irrespective of creed or belief, and so long as the demai ds of newspaper ethics are complied with, its columns are available to all. As regards our responsibility in thi- matter it may be well to refer to a letter in th2 Avis of 30th ultimo in which Father Daily implies a defence of pub- lishers by stating ‘‘they argue they simply do the material part, namely the printing”’. In the present case we have not even printed the_ books, but merely accepted a signed ad¥ertisement of the m, and can therefore lay claim the full sup- port of this argument.
