Skeoch) would like to draw attention to the fact that the hurricane season s approaching and if this matter is delayed for any length of time it might place the community in a precarious position, 4th Appointed Member (Blackwood) then read a letter from Henry Hesd & Co. Ltd., Brokers for the Insurance Com- pany. Government Secretary (Gaffney) would like to know the date the letter was writ- ten, The Chairman replied : 29th March. Government Seeretary (Gaffney) said:- The first time this Bill was brought to my attention was the 24th of April. and Government ask that Ist Discussion be not closed today. It was put to the vote and unanimouc- ly carried that the Bil! be furthered. The Chairman remarked: At the re- quest of Guvernment Ist Discussion on the Bill remains open until next meeting. The Chairman further remarked : Be- fore ~ivi:.y a recess I wish to draw at- tention that each year the Council elects four Members to serve on the Electoral Board. As the election is for one year only, 1 wish to bring the matter up to- day so tiat the Council may eleet the members. ; For last year the following were elect- ed : . For Christiansted Town: D. C. The Chairman then gave a recess of 10 minutes. i After recess the Council reconvened and the Chairman asked Members to prepare their voting tickets for a com- mittee of 5 members to receive and re- port on Celonial Counci! Bill No. 18. 11 voting tickets werc handed in. Elected were: 2nd Member for Chris- tiansted Town (Canegata) and Ist Mem- ber for Frederiksted Country Distriet (Andersen) with 11 votes respectively, Ist Member for Frederiksted Town (Coul- ter) with 9 votes, 3rd Mewber for Chris- tiansted Town (Alexander) with 8 votes and sth Appointed Member Meclntosh) with 7 votes. : 3rd Member for Christiansted Country District (Robt. W. Skench) received 5 votes 2nd Member for Frederiksted Town (Merwin) 2 votes and Ist Appointed Member (Hendersen) and Ist Member for Christiansted Town (Abramson) re- ceived one vote respeetively. The Chairman asked the Committee to meet after the Council Meeting to eleet its Chairman. The Chairman then asked Members to prepare their voting tickets for Election of men to the various Eleectoval Evards as customary. - Accordingly 12 voting tiekets were handed in for the eleetion of four men to serve on the Eleetoral Board. Outside of the Order of the Day the Chairman remarked: A suggestion has been made that Members meet after the Council meeting today to hold a Com- mittee Meeting of the whele House upon the Tax Crdinance instead of this even- ing. After some discussion it was put to the vote and carried that the meeting taks place immediately after the Couneil Meet- ing. There beingz no further business be- fore the House the Chairthan deelared the meeting closed at 5 p. m. LOCAL. The S. S. **Marina’ on her usual sche- dule arrived here on Saturday and sailed acain yesterday from Frederiksted. Seventy two bags were landed for this port. Tonight there will be sereened at the theatre a drama reported sto be of ex- ceeding attractiveness. Readers will note programme in tlis issue. Dear Sir:— Some days ago my attention was called to the fact that an association against the prohibition amendment whieh has a following of over five hundred thousand persons in New York City, and whose activities are assuming very large proportions throughout the entire United States of America, were holding mee:- ings at Carnegie Hall. It came to tay mind, that it wou'd be a fine thing to lay the ecause of probibition and its effeets on the Virgin Islands, and thus give the ecommissioners who are coming so this country a fair opportuni- ty of reaching thesAmerican nation. I immediately eommunicnted with the Managing Vice President Capt W. H. Stayton U. 8. N. (retired) asking that the commission be given an opportunity to speak at one or two of their meetings, with kno~ledge of the faet that their woids would arouse the sympathy of America, as the resylt.
