Downing Street, however, denies knowledge, apnd points out that Lord Milner is not likely to think of retirement until his Egyptian Government scheme has been realized. Rome, Sept. 14th —Trooys belonging to the forces of Dannunzio have oc. cupied the islands of Arbe Cherso and Veglia in the Gulf of Quarnerno, south- west of Fiume, according to reports received here. London, Segt. 14th.—The most arrest- ing fact in the coal strike situation is the " bold condemnation ot the miners’ demand for a reduction in eoal prices by Thomas Spencer, one of their own leaders. The miners argue that enormous profits are being made by the owners, but officiai figures show that in the quarter ending June only five areas show any profit and the total was only 8,000,000 sterling. London, Sept. l4th.—Negotiations for the settlement of the Irish question which are described- as the most prom- ising as yet initiated, will be nallified if Mr. MacSweeny dies, says the Dubli correspondent of the Times. Secret ne- gotiations on the basis of full govern- ment within tlhie empire have been go- ing on during the last threc weeks be- tween the most prominent leaders of mod- ern opinion and influential Republicans, he declared. The Moderates have at last been told, he adds, that nothing further can be dene while MacSweeney is near death and if the Lord Mayor dies, the last hope of settlement on the proposed basis will disappear.
