January 8 U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. today announced that non-essential government employees in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be granted administrative leave on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in alignment with President Joseph R. Biden’s declaration of a National Day of Mourning to honor the life and legacy of former President James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. President Carter, the 39th President of the United States, recently passed away after a life devoted to service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. As a leader, humanitarian, and advocate for global peace and democracy, President Carter’s contributions to the nation and the world have left an indelible mark on history. “President Jimmy Carter was a statesman whose legacy of humility, courage, and boundless compassion will forever inspire us all,” Governor Bryan said. “His leadership extended beyond politics, reminding us that true service to humanity transcends personal ambition. The Virgin Islands joins the nation in honoring his remarkable life and contributions.” Governor Bryan also announced that he will travel out of the territory from January 8 to January 10 to attend the State Funeral for former President Carter at the invitation of President Biden. While the Governor is out of the territory, Commissioner of Finance Kevin McCurdy will serve as Acting Governor, and Senate President Novelle E. Francis Jr. will serve as Acting Lieutenant Governor, as Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach, Esq., will also be out of the territory during this time. All non-essential government employees will be granted administrative leave on January 9, 2025, to reflect on and commemorate President Carter’s life and legacy. Essential government employees are expected to report to work as scheduled. Businesses and private organizations are encouraged to observe the day as they deem appropriate. President Carter, known for his leadership during his presidency from 1977 to 1981, spent decades after leaving office championing human rights, democracy, and global health initiatives through the Carter Center. His unwavering dedication to improving lives and his humility as a leader continue to resonate worldwide.
