[, ® Dear Sir:— : Since your return from the United eStates we have been observing every step you make in the 3t. Croix La- bor Union of which we are members. When |eaving for the States you told us in your farewell address ‘‘Be vigilant, be sober, be loyal, be true to our cause’’. Hardly three months after your absence friction arose in all parts of our institu- tion—and we feel that you know who was the trouble-maker! With your las: impressive words in our bhearts, togethe: with the confidence we then placed iy you, we remained faithful to our institu- tion and the former president. On your return home, instead of redress for our grievances, we are whipped by scorpions. You asked our assistanee for a eourse in law, that you might protect us from _injustice! Today you are using that op- portunity to prosecute our 'defenseless members in court. You said we were enslaved by the white people, and you would redeem us, and make us free. WNe followed where you led, as blind men would. After our five years of struggle you are using the sheriff to eject our members from the ten-by-ten rooms on our own estates, and these same white people whom you taught us to despise and rogard as ty- rants are now giving us shelter. . You have, on the other hand opened our magnificiemt dwellings to your strang- ers and non-union friends, where they live in luxury. Our meeting houses, owned by Catho- lics, Moravians, Anglicans, Lutherans, and others are turned over for free use to the A. M. E. Church just established: while its members boast that they will close the door of the other churches. Such a propaganda to be given birth in a non-denominational society as the Union! e The men who openly denounced you ara our Union are your nearest friends today. Why did you not say to us that you changed your tactics, and let us all change at the same time ? Don’t you know how, by lies, scandal and slander, open and under cover the Union and the island have been almost destroyed; how the peace and serenity of of our once beautiful island dis~ppeared ? Has such a feariul condition ever exist- ed?? And who introduced the evil among us ? Dear Mr. President, this is a protest against the advantage taken of Union Members who are all entitled to equal rights in our properties: If things con- tinue to drift this way we shall have to appeal o the Government for protecti~
