US Virgin Islands Economic Review April 2009 Bureau of Economic Research 1050 Norre Gade No. 5 Charlotte Amalie St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands 00802 REPORT: ECONOMIC CONDITIONS US Virgin Islands Economic Conditions US Bureau of Economic Research Overview General economic conditions worsened in recent months, underscoring the severity of recessionary conditions in the US economy— critically important to the Territory as the primary market for visitors, trade and investment. Key economic indicators have now declined for the past two quarters. Job losses have mounted, initial unemployment insurance claims are at high levels, construction has come to a virtual halt; and despite federal monetary and fiscal stimulus measures to increase liquidity in the financial markets and stimulate demand through public spending, consumer and business spending and investment continues to contract.
