BOARD OF TRUSTEES UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Resolution approving the establishment of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) at the University of St. Martin (USM) Foundation _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ WHEREAS, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) is committed to expanding business development approaches that are capable of complimenting its existing efforts to enhance income generation, and; WHEREAS, UVI is committed to increasing its enrollment in support of its mission and to grant more students across the Caribbean region the opportunity to obtain a degree in a chosen field of higher education studies, and; WHEREAS, UVI has a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the University of St. Martin (USM) for purposes of program articulation, student transfers, degree completion programs, research and development, and expanding its relationship with USM to serve as an extension campus of UVI, and; WHEREAS, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) has for many years recognized USM as an additional location where one hundred percent of UVI programs could be offered, and; WHEREAS, due to economic conditions in the wider Eastern Caribbean and challenges surrounding the obtaining of United States student visas, UVI and USM have agreed to increase the number of UVI programs at USM under the UVI at USM initiative, and; WHEREAS, UVI is required to establish a legal mechanism on St. Maarten that would allow it to formally operate, conduct banking/financial transactions including the collection and disbursement of tuition and fees; and for such mechanism to be in the form of the establishment of the UVI at USM Foundation, and; WHEREAS, UVI seeks the consideration and approval of the Board of Trustees to establish the UVI at USM Foundation within the context of conducting University related business in St. Maarten for purposes of expanding the reach of the University into the Eastern Caribbean. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS: A. UVI is authorized to establish the UVI at USM Foundation and to conduct University related business in St. Maarten. B. The President and Vice-President for Business Development and Innovation are authorized to take such actions as are necessary and proper to implement this resolution. CERTIFICATION The undersigned hereby certifies that the foregoing is a true and exact copy of a resolution of the Board of Trustees of the University of the Virgin Islands adopted at a meeting on June 4, 2016 as recorded in the minutes of said meeting.
