The Creole arrived here yesterday evening and will lea.e again for St. Thomas at 9 a. m. today. In view of impending hardships and difficulties facing this community through the enforcement of ¢ld sanitary regula- tiops of 1886 under the provisions of paragraph 28 of whick the Board of health is given certain to power control the sale of provisions, it is respectfully brought to the notice of all' concerned that the public is strongly opposed to the measures published in the notice of the Chief Sanitary Officér where it is made known that all who make bread, cakes, pies, pastries, candies, etc., will be obliged to have special rooms for such work, screened so as to be absolutely fly-proof. The cpposition to this is based upon the ground that the criginal inten- tion of the regulation did not contem- plate such action and is, therefore, mis- applied; that the public 1s utteriy unable to comply with the demands; and that there is no known reason why these de- mands are suddenly being enforced with such determination. Therefore it is proposed that a mass- meeting be held onight for the pur- pose of expressing the sentiment of the public in this matter, and to the end that arbitrary rules which there seems to be an effort on the part of some persons to introduce may be represented to His Ex- cellency the Governor for repeal. The public wants to know whether para- graph 74 of th2 Colonial Law is abro- gated to permit of dwellings being in- truded into for examination of bread- making, ete., without complaint from the public, and it is urged that an appeal be made to His Excellency toward the re establishment of the various comais- *® sions which were Ly consent of the Council surrendered under the admin- istion of the former governor. Dear Sir:— Notwithstanding your subsequent statement, denying the original, that the Machinery and Outfit of the Central Sugar-Factory, was, or is being scld: it is nevertheless quite understood in weii- informed circles that, negotiations are now proceeding whereby this Important Business may, as far as St. Croix 1s con- eeried, soon be an affair of the past; and the town of Christiansted and the people of its immediate vicinity shall be facing what can well be looked upon as an Indus- trial and Commercial Disaster for, lot the main point in connection therewith be well considered: the sale of this concer -, which has for over forty years, been the means of suport, directly or indirectly to this large section of the Island, goes hence to another land; and therefore Mr. Editor, the text of this ecorrespond- ence:—"‘What, of the future of Christian- sted’’ ? It is not my purpose to tead a diseon- sciate army of heari-broken, weeping and wailing people, whose hopes may appear forever lost, and who see no remedy for a disastrous situation—on the contrary, 1 desire rather to puint out that the opportunity for euterprising business-men and Capitalists of which no better chance has even been offered whereby a plan for utilizing the once discarded but recentiy reclaimed: and restored Eastend estates, than the pres- ent, and which if taken in hand by the . men to whom allusion is made anda prop- er interest awakened in those, then the Central Factory’s site and buildings may | in a very short time be converted into such ganother, as the present never has been. One or More investors of the Aineri- can type—the Men who delight in invest- ing Capital for developing natural ve- sources that promise fair returns, might readily be induced to buy out the bhuild- ings after the machinery has been re- moved and install a plant suitable for business of twoor three times the vol- ume of the present one, with all the lat- est and up-to-date improvements.
