London, April 28th.—From Bucking- ham Palace the following official an- nouncement was issued last night. In accordance with the settled general rule that a wife takes the status of her hus- band, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on her marriage has become Her Royal High- noss ihe Duchess of York, with the stat- us of Princess. This has set at resta guestion which has caused considerable discussicn during the last few days. It was evident that the marriage made Lady Elizabeth a Duchess, but there- were no clear precedents as to her acces- sion to the rank of Princess and title of Roval Highness. It was of course evi- dent that, as on the event of the Prince of Wales not marrying, she might be the mother of the heirs presumptive to the throne of Britain, and that she would re- ceive the full status of a wife of a Royal Pripce, but there was some doubt as to whether she had alreay attained it or whe- ther it would conferred on her by special grant. The King’s ruling establishes a pre- cedent which undoubtedly will be applied in the event of his other sons marrying ou:side the Royal circle, and as changes made during the war in regard to other members of the Royal family opened the v.ay for descent from Royal rank and for a gradual merging of the children of Royal blood into the ranks of com- m®ers, so this provides an automatic means by which eommoners may attain Ro®al honours. Operators offered Cuba’s down to 64 cents a pound, without attracting buyers, although this figure was a quar- ter cent lower than the recent high price for raw. The deciine followed publica- tion of a report of a movement by house- wives to support a buyers strike, while the sent high prices existed. Some operators attributed the break partly to uncertain- ty over pending governmental action against the New York coffee and sugar exchange here on Monday. Capetown, April 28th. -All but two of the lifeboats belonging to the Portuguese steamship Mossamedes, wrecked several days zgo at Cape Frio, are now reported to have been pickea up. The Mossame- des carried 238 passengers. Capetown, April 29th. —The Portu- guese gun-boat “Qqglvador Correia’ ar- rived at Mossamedes on Friday with 110 survivors of the steamship ‘‘Mossame- des”’ wrecked several days aco at the Cape Frio. 84 survivors have been land- ed at Port Alexander and the French gun-hnat “‘Cassiope’” is on its way 1o Mossamedes with 33 others. Thus far 997 of the 253 aboard the ship, inelud- ing passengers and crew, are known to have been saved. Berlin, April 29th. —The propesed con- foarence hetweer the Central Government and the Presidents and Premiers of the German States to discuss the reparations questicns was postponed today until Tuesday, when the pohtical party leaders also wi'l be received.
