TELEGRAMS. ST. CROIX STATION. Brussels, Feb. 27th—The Government was defeated in the Chamber of Deput- ios today by a voie of 95 to BJ, on the Franco Belgian Convention. Christiana, Feb. 27ch.. Ahout fifty thousand workers are idle in Norway in consequence of the unrest in the labour world for several weeks past, with the prospect that 24,000 will be added to this number tomorrow, unless there is an unexpected settlement meanwhile. New York, Feb. 28th.—Sugar ad- vanced 1116 ecents today, as a result of increased buying by operators, with Cubas quoted at 7.:2 duty paid. The sales azyrecated 50,000 bags of March shipment. lofluenced by the firmer spot market, raw cugar futures were higher on covering and buving by Wail Street interests, some of the latter believed to be for European account. Prices at best showed wains of 12to 14 points, with May selling at 561 and July at 5.65 but at these leveis offerings increased and there were partiai reac- tions. Tie close was7 to 9 points net higher. March closed at 5,50, May 5.55, July and Szptember 5.59. The steadier tone in the market for raws failed to in spire any increased demand for refined and trading continued light. Prices were unchanged at 7.90, to 9.15 for granu- lated. Refined futures were nominai. Ottaw., Feb. 98'h—Canada’s 156th Par- liament was opened today by the Gov- ernor Lord Byng with customary cere- monies. The House will adjourn today untill Mounday. Tariff reductions are re- ported to be op the Government’s pro- gramime. No. 50.
