All children six years of age or over must b: present at their respective schools at 9 a. m. on that day ; non-at- tendance, except for legitimate cause, is punishable by a fine imposed on parents or guardians. Children who will attain the age of six years within four months after Septem- be* 8, 1919, may b admitted to schools on that date when written application of parents or guardiais to do so has been aporoved by the fichool Director. No child except in the case of new ar- rivals in St. Croix, will be admitted to school after Septeriber 8, 1919, until the besrinning of the scaool year in September 19:0, unless they cin show fitness to un- dertake the work of a class already es- taklished. Semi-annual enrcllment r admittances are discontinued, as it will be impossible to admit pupils to a class after the begin- ning of the schoo! year. An entirely new uet of text-books has been secured, and a new system of teach- ing in accordance with American methods and ideas, will be established. The town was aroused at 2 a. m. today and is still anxious eoncerning the wea- ther which had appeared disturbed from yesterday afternoon. The Weather Bu- reau at San Juan reports moderate dis- turbance forming over Leeward Islands apparently moving northward, lowest barometer at 8 p. m., 2nd, 29.76 at St. Kitts; caution adwised. The barometers in this town which had been gradually falling the lowest record being as far we knaew, 29.75, are now rising, and it is be- lieved the storm centre has passed. Ow- ing to the weather, the mail-schooner Creole has not arrived here this morn. ing. OFFICIAL NIEWS. The trial trip of the Pilot boat St. Thomas took place on Saturdav after- ncon and was verv successful. A speed of nine knots was attained. The trip covered about tep miles fromm the har- bormaster’s wharf over the triangle course Frenchman’s Gap and return. Governor Oman, Capt. Williamßus- sell White, U. S. N., Captain Leo S. F. Horan, Marine Corps, Acting Chairman of the Harbor Board, Mr. Corneiro, a number of the Harbor Board and sever- al guests were in the party. The President of the United States on August 28, signed an Executive Or- der directing that on and after that date the Coast Guard operate under the Treasury Department. During the past two years the Coast Guard Service was under the Jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Navy. T.e Parade yesterd v was reviewed by Governor Oman and his staff from the balecony of Government House. He commented freely on the very neat ap- pearance and orderly manner of the paraders. Captain Frank N. Gilmore, Marine Corps, now on duty at Marine Barracks, Frederiksted, St. Croix has been or- dered to the United States for discharge. Accompanied by Mrs. Gilmore, he will leave on an early transport. The U. S.S. Kittery enroute to St. Thomas arrived at Port au Prince, Haiti, on Saturday. The American Steel Ooil burning steamer St. Johns County, from Jack- sonville, Florida, with general cargo for South American ports called yester- day for fresh water. The French cable-ship Pouyerquertir arrived in Krumbay, St. Thomas, yes- terday from San Juan, and will go to- day to make further cable repairs. 2 Captain Bartoe of the Marine Corps end a detachment of the 53th Company, U. S. Marines, will arrive at Frederik- sted on bvard the U. S. S. Vixen on Wed- nesday to take station there. Captain Bartoe will act as Command- ing Officer of this detachment and also as Chief of the Fire Department and As- sistant to the Policemaster. : Captain Gilmore who has been detach- ed from duty in the island and ordered to the United States will leave by the U. S. S. Vixen. } The Despatching Secretary advices us that owing to unsettled weather con- ditions Governor Oman_has postponed the date of his visit to Frederiksted on the U. S. S. Vixen, which was announc- ed for today.
