Correspondence. The Editor of ‘'St. Croix Avis.’’ Dear Sir - Just a few lines in vraise of that excellent drama entitled “"The Price Os " (3ood Time’' exhibited in the Chris- riansted Theatre on Thursday evening last. Without doubt it was one of the pest plays shown here for a long time, and ought to have been :een by a much larger audience. As a rule the shows on Thursday evenings are not verv well patronized, but we would like to men- sion for the benefit of the absent ones, that they are passing over lightly scme very instructive numbers of the screen, which are never shown on anyother even- ings but Thursday. The serials might be atright in their way, but it must he remembered that we are compelied to wait eight or nine weeks before the. whole of a serial can be shown, while on Thursday evenings we see complete stories, which is a decided ad- vantage over the serials. As we were saying, this seven reel drama of Thursday evening was an ex- ceptional one, anda we repeat very In- structive, and is sure to meet a hearty welecome by our friends of the Wast End Movies to-night. Such high class dramas are rthe kind we appreciate, and hope to see many more of that class. One thing before we close, and -this we say without any offence to any one, wiil o@r aspiriny movie pianist give us A npew program to nigtft. considering that' he has an eleetric bulb over . his music? We would also appreciate a little more of what is called in the mu- sical language ‘‘tone color’. And last hut not least, it would be excellent—- if not too expensive, to get appropriate music tor the movies, as on Thursday eveningit was really funny to see the death scene in the last part of the dra- ma, and hear a captivating waltz at the same time. Sandy Hook, July 22nd.—The Sham- rock will enter tomorrow’s race against Resolute with a new top-mast and new top-yxil, the regatta committee of tlge New York Yacht Clubs, announced to night. After Shamrock’s Captain had notified the committee of his change he requesteda remeasurement of her sail area, but the officia! measure was un- able to reach the Lipton yachts moor- ings in time to do the work tonight. The committee announced however, that tomorrow’s race will be runfon the basis of a time allowarce of six minutes and forty seconds for the Resolute, sub- ject to any change that may result from ¢ remeasurement of the Shamrock’s topsail, This was the original allow- ance, but it was later increased to seven minutes one second, when' Shamrock put in and used a rear gear club topsail Shamrock’'s canvas will be remeasured after the race tomorrow and if the con- test is at al close, the winner may not be known until several hnurs a‘ter the vachts have crossed the finish "line, ‘The new topmast of the challenger was reported so be mueh stronger than the old one, which showed signs of weak ness, according to yacht club officials Mon:rea! The state- ment was based on official reports London, July 21st.—The retusal of the Russian Soviet Govt. to cease war against Poland ar the behest of Great Britain, is contained in a Moscow wire- less despateh received here todav. The refusal also constitutes an appeal to the workers and peasants of Soviet Russia and the Ukraine. London, July 21st —Mr. Lloyd George addressing the House of Commons to- day, said the Soviet answer to the Al- lies regarding peace with Poland was incoherent, ambiguous anda propagan- da largely intended for home consump- tion. So far as he could understand however, the Soviet indicated its wil- lingness to negotiate direet with Poland. The Premier declared that the Sovier Govt. aiso wanted to give Poland bet- ter boundaries than those named by the Allies. Mr. Lioyd George said there were some phrases in the Soviet message indicating the Bolshevists on- ly were prepared to discuss the matter with a preletariat Govt. He declared Supplement so St. Croix Avis, No. 170, 26th July 1520. the Soviet Govt had no right to dictate to Poland what sort of Govt. the Poles should have. The Premier asserted that an independent Poland was essential to the whole fabric of peace and the Allies were resolved that they must arrest the destruction of Poland and the march of the Bolshevik armies through VPolish territory. If the Bolshevists overran Poland, they would be up against the German frontier and Mr. Lloyd George said, this would furrnish Germany a great temptatior with her million of trained men. It would be a cheap way, accord- ing to the Premier for Germany so get out of her obligations. ‘'] only ask the members, to think wheth- er it might yet have the effect of depriving the Allies of the fruits of a dearly bought victory’’. He pointed out that the Soviet Govt. had not been chos- en by the Russian seople and he deciared that it was as great an autocracy as its predecessor. The Premier announced that the British Ambassador at Berlin had gone to Poland and it was possible Marshal Foch would go there later. It was to the interest of Great Britain and to Europe that Poland should not be wiped out, he declared. In order to test the good faith of the Soviet Govt. he ex- plained, it was decided at Spa to advise Po and to apply to Russia for an armis- tice with view to peace.
