Sewer Post 1 No. 131 after the veteran of the Korean Conflict; and 2 WHEREAS, Viggo Edison Sewer was the second of eight children born to Anna Blyden 3 Sewer and Felix Sewer on May 5, 1932, on the island of St. John; and 4 WHEREAS, Mr. Sewer attended the Benjamin Franklin Elementary School (now the 5 Guy H. Benjamin Elementary School) in Coral Bay, St. John and later the Charlotte Amalie 6 High School on St. Thomas; 7 WHEREAS, he was an avid sports fan and enjoyed taking part in sports; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Sewer joined the United States Army in February of 1951 and was 9 subsequently sent to Korea as a member of Company C, 13th Engineer Combat Battalion, 7th 10 Infantry Division; and 11 WHEREAS, Private Viggo Edison Sewer fought valiantly in the Korean Conflict; and 12 2 WHEREAS, on February 5, 1953, Private Viggo Edison Sewer was killed in active duty 1 near Horggeye-Dong, Korea, at the young age of 2l; and 2 WHEREAS, Private Sewer was the first Virgin Islander to die in the Korean Conflict 3 and was buried at the Emmaus Moravian Church Cemetery in Coral Bay; and 4 WHEREAS, Private Sewer was posthumously awarded the Korean Service Medal, the 5 United Nations Service Medal, the National Defence Service Medal and the Republic of Korea 6 War Service Medal; Now, Therefore, 7 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the Virgin Islands: 8 SECTION 1. The Legislature of the Virgin Islands, on behalf of the people of the Virgin 9 Islands honors and commends Viggo E. Sewer posthumously for his ultimate contribution to 10 the people of the Virgin Islands. 11 SECTION 2. In recognition of Viggo E. Sewer’s contribution to the people of the Virgin 12 Islands East End Road, on Route 10 on the island of St. John is renamed “The Viggo E. Sewer 13 Road.” 14 SECTION 3. The sum of $10,000 is appropriated in the fiscal year ending September 15 30, 2024, from the General Fund to the Department of Public Works for the purpose of erecting 16 the appropriate signage. 17 SECTION 4. The President of the Legislature or the President’s designee shall prepare 18 and present a perma plaque copy of this act to Mr. Sewer’s family at an appropriate ceremony. 19 BILL SUMMARY 20 This bill is to honor and commend Viggo E. Sewer posthumously for his contribution to 21 the people of the Virgin Islands by renaming East End Road on Route 10 on the island of St. 22 John, in his honor. 23 BR23-0386/October 23, 2023/LMW 24
